Need a new car for the wife

Peugeot 206 HDi diesel, very comfy, mega mpg, feels bigger than you`d think! Just bought the missus one, very happy with it :D £5k will get you a lot of car ;)

I had a Volvo S60 for three years without any problems at all. Great style, comfort and strong as an ox! Very low prices now too! Highly recommended!

Does she mind being called 'the wife'? ;):p

We run a 1996 P reg Audi A4 Avant as a 'shopping car', it's on almost 120k miles and the only thing it's ever had is a recon. automatic gearbox. Not a speck of rust.

For £5k you'd get a new-shape one around 2002.

Mitsubishi colt diesel
BMW 320d
Toyota Yaris
VW Polo 1.9TDI

All good cars in my opinion, easily had for under £5k, under 5 years old, with sensible miles and not french!

Just remembered, a friend of ours bought a Fiat Punto Grande a year or so back, which is an astonishing little car! Very spacious and really funky looking, inside and out! Really does look like a little Maserati! So far, it's been solid gold reliability too. £5K would buy a very nice one.

I went on Piston Heads to have a look, they are really a well specced car, seem very good value and in a strange way, quite a good looking car. They must get overlooked by everyone, myself included.
I think i liked the older (pre 96 facelift) than the update.

I will have to find out if they go on forever like the other Volvo's and if the diesels are good?

I bought Mrs sp!ke an S60 last year for a little over £5k.

Its already done two trips to the continent and has been completely trouble free.

Make sure you go for the S60 D5 SE model which includes all the toys, leather etc, is quick, and managed 60mpg on my 50 mile round trip commute through west london's finest traffic.

The only downsides to the car are poor turning circle and poor rear visibility, both of which we've now got used to.

Still a big car though.

No french or fiat and you will prob be okay:D, pug hdi google fuel pumps:D, what are the local taxi drivers using? lots of skodas around this way octavias i think, all part of the vag group.

Car mag i buy bought ex taxi skoda 200k new brakes, shox and a couple of minor bits and its now their pool car.

I think the Audi A2 diesel is a cracking car: low tax, high efficiency, long service intervals, small exterior, clever interior.

I diesel still the best choice? given that it's 10p per litre more? Perhaps a nice eco petrol would be better?

Who knows....?

She does about 60/70 miles motorway driving a day, so im looking for a motor that is good for quite a lot of mileage that i want to last at least 5 years.
I only have about £5,000 to spend very soon, like now.
Any suggestions?

P.S. She blew up her Smart car today that i have been begging her to get rid of for ages because it is not suited to such a life.
Im not happy at the moment:(.
I now have to see if i can get it repaired but do not hold out much hope.

First that springs to mind for me is a Lexus IS200. For that price you could pick up one with not THAT many miles, although its kind of irrelevant as the cars are bullet proof.

I had mine for 5 years, sold it with nearly 130k on the clock and the only things that ever needed doing were the waterpump and cambelt at 100k and the obvious change of brakes and tyres.

Hello

We now have two A class LWB in our family and both are great, ours is a A210 Evo and my brothers a A170Cdi. you can move the back seats forward and reclins them back? if you want. I find them comfortable and like the slightly higher Driving position which is good in the lanes and motorway. OUrs we have had 3 years and costs very little to run. Being the AMG model its quite rare and looks smart?

Pleanty of good cars about I like the Golfs for size / comfort / Performance / Safety.

A agree the smart doesn't look right on Motorways given its the size of a Lorrys tyre.

How about the four door smart if your wife likes them ? There a bit more like a normal car size but an aquired taste.

When i was in South Africa in Feb i drove a Honda Jazz, had it for three weeks did some three four hour trips. I must say one of the most comfortable cars i have driven on par with my S-Class.

I don't know if you can get one for £5,000 though.
