Need new front tyres but have diffent size rear tyres.

I need some new front tyres 245/40ZR19. The back ones are 275/35ZR19. As I need the new ones is there any benefit from going down a size 245/35ZR19 to match the rear?
Also can anyone recommend a seller in the SW area of London that's cheep.
 
You will find that the rear wheels are wider than the front and thats why they are different sizes.

You're tyre are already matched. Going down a size will change the diameter and miss match them.

35% of 275 will be roughly the same as 40% of 245.
The aspect ratio is a percentage of the tread width.

If it's anything like my car then you certainly couldn't put narrower tyres on the same wheels.
I have 225R16/50 on 8J wheels on the rear and according to all the guides, the tyres are too narrow for the wheels as it is. Have 205R16/55 on 7J's on the front and they're a bit marginal too.

If you can do it then the advantage would be that you can put the new tyres on the rear and the part worns on the front. always recommended to put the best rubber on the back and saves scrubbing the edges of new tyres on the front!

Those tyres are within spec on all the guides I've looked at (std fit on 208 and wider rear were optional on 202s)

Sorry, I wrote it the wrong way around - the wheel/tyre guides I've looked at indicate that the wheels are too wide. 7.5J is generally noted as max width that 225R16's can be fitted to.

I have 8J tyres and they are a perfect fit for a 225 tyre. Perfectly vertical sidewall and reccomended by the manufacturer.

They're a different size for a reason ....

Mine are 225/45/17 on the front and 245/40/17 on the rear . No idea why , but MB have decreed it that way ! :D

Find a local tyre fitter and bung him a drink to fit them


The Falken tyres look good does anyone have any experience with them. Are they quiet (Road noise) and do they last.
 
As i say , i have them on mine . Had them about 6 months , seem good.

Lots of grip , not particularly noisy , seem a good tyre all round to be honest. Quite a few members on here have them , don't think anyone has them in 19 though to be honest , but can't see that it would make a difference.

They rave about them on the Jap forums , which is what made me try them .

Different size will also effect your speedo reading...but maybe this can be adjusted to suit...not sure
 
Just had new tyres fitted and all wheel alignment with this lot http://blackboots.co.uk/ They weren't the cheapest on the tyres BUT they did a fantastic job. I watched while they did it, and talk about tougher they even cleaned the rims of the wheels before putting the tyres on. What a difference. The car drives with NO pull to the left they knew straight away what to look for with MB. As they think MB puts too much pull (to the left) for the road camber. Went for the Dunlop Maxx sport in the end, so far so good.

How does it work with the two companies there - do they operate separately or are you really just dealing with one place?

Just dealing with one in reality. It seamed as though the tyres are in one area and the aliment is in another. But its all in an immaculate workshop that can accommodate two cars tyre changed at the same time and one car having the wheel alignment. All very professional, way above the usual tyre shop, more like a racing specialist who is very proud of what they do.

The rolling diameter is the important bit, not width or aspect ratio. The ones fitted are the same diameter front and rear. If you go for a smaller aspect ratio (%) you will have a smaller diameter on front. This may cause abs, tps and cruise control errors.

You will see your standard front and rear are pretty close . You can go a couple on mm's in reality, ie wear will do that.

This means you can go wider say on rear but use a smaller % aspect to achieve same diameter.

I'd have to disagree with that statement. If you pick a wider tyre with a smaller aspect ratio to keep the same rolling diameter for example, you will find the tyre may foul the suspension or bodywork.

The diameter, width & aspect ratio are all linked to each other & equally important.

There are a few reasons for the tyre stagger...

1: The extra rear contact patch helps to gain tyre saturation limits, reducing the tendency to over-steer.

2: The steer axis is exactly that, so a wide front tyre would intrude on the available space between the suspension and the body, in particular during weight transition on a lock.

MB's tyre stagger, aspect ratio, pneumatic slip angles where born from intense research into the dynamic chassis and in my opinion it wouldn't be wise to deviate from this.
