New E280 arrived

Power wise I don't think theres much in it but the new one sounds a lot nicer on tickover. I opened the door of the test model I drove and gave it a little rev up and it was so smooth it could have almost been a V6 petrol model. Thats the only complaint I have with mine really, the noise.

Hi Marcos,
I know you have had your 320CDI for a while now. Is it 'noisey' at tickover, or can you actually hear the engine whilst driving?

We will know doubt be testing the R320CDI, but that will not be for a while.

John

280CDI for 9 months.

Hi Barry,
Congratulations on the new car and join the club of satisfied customers.

I am looking forward to hearing your opinion on the new V6. Have you had any of the previous generation CDI engines and if so I look forward to hearing how they compare.

Happy motoring,

Regards,
John
This car has been available on the continent for some time and I have had my 280CDI since February - auto, station wagon.
I only know the 270 from having driven a friends but the 280 is far, far more smooth although it is noisy at rest.
I average 8.2l 100km which i think is about 40mpg. On a journey I get around 7.6 while in town it is around 9.3 to 10. Zero problems with the car so far.

Yours is a different engine though I believe to the E280 just introduced in the UK. Is yours not the 3.2 litre detuned version of the original E320CDI? rather than the new 3-litre V6 diesel just launched in the E280CDI and E320CDI.

It's not really noisy John it's just that I'm very fussy with noise. Most people can't tell it's diesel but I can and it irritates me a bit. Must be I'm getting old eh

If you're getting old, your hearing should be less sensitive ....

:) I know what you mean :)

It is nice havinga large car and not knowing that the engine is ticking over as per the Lexus advert

Still at least we have an excellent engine :D

John

You could be right but I have no idea, I just know that it is a 280CDI but I believe it could be a de-tuned 320.

Don't the rear sensors only work when you engage reverse??

John

Maybe John, but they also make one hell of a noise when a row of them get smashed out !!

Then, after a few seconds, silence. Followed by the sensor system turning itself completely off.

Paul.

I travelled on business this week and the car is so ,so comfortable, very powerfull though a little thirsty ,I am sure though this will improve.

Barry

The MPG should improve slightly as the engine beds in but don't expect miracles. The auto box consumes approx 5MPG and the Euro IV complience reduces MPG.

id guess with an enigne like that in your car it would be kicking about 20-25 in the town and about 30-35 on a run , maybe 40 if your easy on the gas.

Its the 6cyl syndrome coupled by the eu4 and auto box.

Lovely car , don't get me wrong , but these are realistic figures IMHO

:p You really know how to cheer folks up. I never realised there was that much of a difference?

The EU4 thing is indeed a nuisance, is there any tax benefit in having the higher spec? (On the new engines I don't think there is a choice)

John

You can buy only EU4 cars from Jan06 by law.

For company car drivers the 3% diesel surcharge was waived if the car was EU4 complient, but due to the lower tax take from diesel cars that has now been removed. Convenient eh!!

I personally am not a fan of too tightly reduced emissions because the EU3 level was very low anyway, but EU4 reduces engine efficiency, thus engines now consume more fuel which creates more pollution and uses more fuel resources.
I think we should accept that all engines produce local pollutants in small-ish amounts, but that efficiency should be the main goal so as to reduce consumption.

I agree.

I think it is hypocritical of Toyota to produce the hybrid RX 400 4x4. They make everyone think it is so efficient, but just look at the complexity needed to get the pretty marginal improvement over a petrol 4x4. And then along comes a bog standard ML320 CDI, which is both more economical and quicker in tests, despite being EU4 compliant.

:D Have you read the latest review comparing the Lexus Hybrid with the M-class.

Not only did the Mercedes win on economy, it also won on comfort, ride etc. all we have to do is put out a contract on the spin doctors that work for both Toyota and Lexus :D
