New monitor time.

Should I go for an LCD. I am thinking about a 19" monitor with about a 4 millisecond refresh rate.

I hope that's the right termology otherwise I'm looking pretty stupid.

What is today's bee's knee's pleeze ;) and where do I get it from?

Thanks in advance for any advice,
John

I think this place is pretty good, refurbished units but the price is very tempting. Take a look at the 20" Dell TFT £266.72 inc VAT and P&P

Thanks Andy and Mambo,
I'm talking with absolutely no knowledge of what I'm on about, but my son assures me that if I want an LCD screen then I MUST go for one with a very low 'thingie' of 8m\s or less. The Liyama is way up at 25m\s which rules it out. I have seen faster versions but they are way too expensive.

Now that I am seriosly looking, it looks like I might be going for a ViewSonic VP191B or the newer VX924.

Has anyone got one, or heard any reports about them.

Mambo,
I am looking for the link regarding your recommendation. I'm a bit thick, but no doubt I will find it.

Thanks again,
John

I have a LG Flatron L1915s which has a 12ms response time (19").

I got mine from ebuyer I think. I paid around 220 gbp for it - which was a brilliant deal at that time...

No problems with it at all and best of all NO dead pixels!!

I play games and watch DVD's with no ghosting...

Hope this helps.

Steve

Found the link here:

just over 200 quid - not bad ey?
Oh , btw =- this is for a TFT monitor - not sure of the difference?!

They haven't updated their specifications John, in the title of the product description it is 8ms

or a non DVI model

I know you like knowledge John, the "thingie" you refer to is the refresh rate - or the time the monitor takes to change a pixel from colour to colour

therefore the lower the time, the smoother the picture will be

Hi Splang,
I do realise what dead pixels are and is this a problem with LCD monitors? I am really, really fussy and would not be happy with the smell of rotting pixie's eminating from my monitor :)

Seriously though, having a couple of dead pixels would eventually drive me mad. Do manufacturers have an acceptable level, or could I send it back with just one little white spot in the middle of the screen?

Thanks everyone for the excellent advice I'm off surfing again including the Splang and Mambo sites. ;)

Regards,
John

QA policy varies between manufactures.

Typically:
Max two adjacent or three discrete failed pixels per screen. Failure defined as either a dead pixel (black) or stuck pixel (permanent colour when energised).

Yields have improved over the years and you'd have to be real unlucky to get even a single failed pixel in every ten panels.

You take a chance of failed pixels when buying panels unseen but the risk is small. Some premium brands (with premium pricing) offer a zero failed pixel guarantee that may be worth the money if your picky...

John,

I buy literally dozens of Iiyama's. In my opinion they are the best for the money. We havn't had one fail at all in two years. Not a single dead pixel in over 200 screens.

That said, Dell do a nice 24" widescreen monitor which I pay £650 for each. Currently evaluating four of them to see how they perform. Hopefully the price will drop soon.

Glad it's not just me!! Feel a bit out voted here with my Iiyama fetish ;)

Thanks for the excellent recommendation. I think the space I have available is only big enough to take a 19" monitor. I have always been a liyama or CTX fan, but the LCD thing is all new to me. Since I have started this thread I am finding out some very interesting information. I think that Hitachi? supply Liyama with their innards?

My son is giving me copious amounts of links to read differing reviews and the SonicView191b seems to be the current monitor within my price range, but my 17" CRT is still working perfectly so I want to get things right :o If that is possible.

A really big thank you though to everyone for their extremely constructive input.

Goodnight everyone,
John

I've said it before when the TFT discussion crops up. Samsung are the dogs. Great product, great customer service and the only ones I'd recommend as a long term prospect.

Hi Howard,
Thanks very much for the tip, I pass it on to my research department. :D Number one son has now been put in charge because as sure as apple's are apple's no matter what one I get, he will say I should have purchased brand X instead.

At present he has located a site where they are comparing the top 5 19" LCD monitors. I have even found out what GTG stands for :) :)

Grey to Grey........ It is evidently the latest test for evalutaing the refresh rates.

Bye for now,
John

If anybody wants a new TFT we have some 17" Viglen ones (made by Mitac), with built in speakers, digital control etc. For £140 each boxed. Only postage to add (about a tenner). Brand new boxed stock.
