I will need 4 new tyres soon so I'm looking at different makes/ styles etc.
I'm currently running Michelin Primacy 245/45/17 and they cover about 18,000 between changes. I quite like the Goodyear F1 but I'm worried it might be a bit soft so will wear quickly. My old C-Class had Dunlop SP9000 tyres and I found them great but I was wondering if anyone had any advice/preferences on tyres.

Thanks in advance

hi marcos
whatever tyres you decide upon try these guys for a price.(http://www.blackcircles.com/) online form filling then they tell you were and who will fit you the tyres nice and easy and cheaper than most.

Well, just to balance the "pro F1" argument, I just changed from Conti EcoContact to SP9000.

Wish I'd found the bloody things years ago. Tyre noise all but eradicated and wet handling superb. And finally - find a dud review of them on the Web. I couldn't.

One hundred quid a corner.

And heres me thinking Dunlops were sh...not very good.

I've changed my mind.

My contisportcontacts were a hell of a lot noiser than the Pirelli P Zero Rossos I replaced them with. The contis lasted very well though -- 23k miles and still about 4 mm left.

Here's a funny thing.

Went for 4 new boots on Monday. They were fitted with the odo reading 119K.

As I filed my receipt that evening I noticed the following receipts:

Previous tyres: ContiSport Contact: replaced at 102K

Tyres before that (Avon ZZ-3): replaced at 84K

Before that: Pirelli P6000: replaced at 68K

So I'm getting 16-18K between tyre changes.

Pretty consistent, I thought.

...my ContiSportContacts lasted 45,000 miles or 3y9m . There was still 3mm on the fronts but the rears were... and I can't understand how people manage to get < 20,000 out of £100 tyres and consider this to be acceptable.
I am aware that my tyres aren't so good in the wet and make alot of noise.
However, I don't go zipping around in the wet and the stereo takes care of the tyre noise. So it seems some people are paying "double" my tyre costs.

But you'll always find that Les. Some people will get 60,000 and will wonder why you only get 45k out of yours. It depends on the way you drive. I tend to drive quite hard and like to give the tyres a work out. I'd love to get 45k out of a set of tyres, but it simply is never going to happen. I get a thrill out of seeing that little yellow light flash on and off :D

I'm probably averaging about 15k which I'm happy with. I used to have a Corrado VR6 which was maintained by my company. I used to put Yokohama A008s (??) on, which were awesome tyres, incredibly sticky ... but after 6,000 miles, they would need replacing.

Horses for courses and all that ...

From my own experience.

Conti's wear very slowly but are very noisy and not very good in the wet.
Michelins are excellent at everything but cost a lot.
Dunlops are really good performance tyres but wear isnt going to be as good as the other two.

If I get 20,000 out of a set of tyres i'd be chuffed!

...fair enough...I used to think I drove quite "enthusiastically" but I have only managed to provoke the ASR triangle 4 times! I even asked them to check the light was working at the last service! But, this is strange as I always seem to be first away from the lights and use full kickdown quite often. I agree with what R2D2 says - its a choice I've made and I'm happy with it. But, I'm obviously just an amateur and wonder what you lot are doing to generate that kind of wear! I wasn't criticising, only making an observation.

usually wearing the shoulders off them by cornering too hard and using the incredible front grip you can generate to lose pesky hothatches!

.........also wet empty roundabouts are irresistable! In slow (otherwise you just understeer right off the roundabout!) then smoothly apply slightly too much throttle until the back goes light and starts to drift! Then hold the back out by using a little opposite lock then at the desired exit it, hoof it and wind the lock off. Get it right and it feels mega get it wrong and you wipe your car out on the kerbs if you are lucky or a lamppost if you are not! Obviously dont do this if you dont know what you are doing and never where there are any pedestrians or other vehicles.

...Hmm!, you do lead an interesting life Mr R2D2!
