Starting in the Spring of 2009, Mercedes will introduce its latest technology: the innovative driver support system Attention Assist, created to detect and warn of driver fatigue. :D

I wouldn't want that in my car. You own the car, not the other way around.
Exactly!

Restart Now or Restart Later? Where is the option to not restart? Who owns the stupid thing? :)

Interesting view, how do you see losing control over the car with these features? Aren't they just assisting you? ESP would be more what you are afraid.

If you drive your car properly the ESP doesn't even activate.

Its not so much me losing control of the car, but the car gaining control of me. It would be a bit like being back @ school where instructions shouted @ you like "stop day dreaming, concentrate" etc.

I am all for ESP as its a safety device, but this protrudes @ a more personal level, IMO.

Hope it can detect if the driver is wearing a naff brown suit and adjust accordingly.

It works by monitoring the alertness of the driver. How can that be a bad thing given;
According to figures, more accidents are caused on motorways (highways) due to over-tiredness than under the influence of alcohol, putting into perspective how important this new system could prove to be.

Would a simpler thing not involve taking a rest if one is a bit tired...

But people don't. They keep going because they don't realise.

They realise by the sound of crunching metal around them. Its called survival of the fittest.

Seriously, I can see the angle your coming from, it just seems to be excessive nannying. What if this system were to fail and the driver to crash, would there be legal implications.

I can't see where it says what it actually does after monitoring the driver. Am I missing something.?
As far as safety aids, people used to say the same about ABS, Airbags, BAS, Seatbelts....and some still do..

the invention of a jobsworth" ans seatbelts "only of some intrinsic value" and really are just there "so a copper can nab you if you haven't got it on".

 ;)

Merc are pioneer in a lot of safety features a few years ahead of the competitions, others chuffed at, you guys precisely just did. Other manufacturers follow suit thereafter.

The climate control is a contributor to tireness. My solution is a sun roof I open it winter or summer. I have seen other drivers gave me a strange look, I don't care.:D

It must as it can detect different drivers and it monitors use of controls, I assume that means where your hands are on the wheel.

its a bit different to the lexus system where a camera watches your eyes and tugs the wheel if your nodding off or looking elsewhere (i.e if VBH is walking on the street).

My old man has an effect wherever he goes: he knows what he likes and likes what he knows ;)

How exactly would it warn the driver? A blaring horn with a german womans voice shouting "Vake up now!"

He will if he goes through the windscreen..it'll be broken.;)

I suspect it means things like indicators and other controls. But how does it take action, is it similar to the Citroen system of vibrating the seat.?

Maybe by ejector seat. The Benz might think I don't want to be driven like a pillock, lets just get rid of this t055er.

Afterall armed with distronic it can stop itself, lock itself up to prevent the bad driver from getting back in :D

At least this system would show a sense of humour, something that lacks in the germans.

I could see the insurance companies getting hold of the 'black box' recorder and weaselling out of a claim or two

The car already would have a lot of data stored from accidents that insurance companies would like to access. MB would not give that except perhaps at an extreme case (don't remember an example, was it the well known MB accident in Paris quite some time ago).

What happens if you have no passengers or just the kids in the back seat... waste of money.

How about windows that are chromatic and get darker the brighter it is outside, now that would be cool...

We shall see nearer time when it gets into the country and we test drive it. At the moment it too early to tell. :D

It could be another useless SBC. Anybody find SBC useful other than also draining your battery flat?
