No service book with car?

Frist thing to remember is that the 30 day / 1000 mile limit is nothing to do with it. You bought a car based on a set of statements made by the dealer and it is reasonable for them to deliver their side of the bargain.
If not then you are entitled to your money back - simple really. But to follow through and enforce it you will need to be able to show a trail of correspondence otherwise it will be difficult for you to prove.
I would take the time to write a recorded del letter and set out the facts starting with the purchase of the car on date xyz - and up to todays phone call. Also state that unless the full service history is supplied as promised then you would not have bought the car so you will be rejecting it and demanding a refund in full.

The dealer was apologetic and promised that the new service book would be sent to us with the history supplied so I suppose I should wait till that comes before I let go with all guns blazing. I will give them another chance as things do get mislaid or lost.

Thanks for all the help everybody. I will keep you posted. I do not feel at this point it is fair to name and shame the dealer although I certainly will do if the next chapter is less than satisfactory.

Phone Mercedes Customer Car on 00800 1777777 and tell them your concerns and ask for the history on file.

100% agree!

They will have all the service history, if any & if done via MB main dealer.

Phoned Mercedes customer care for the service history but they will only give this information to the dealerm as proving identification over the phone is not possible. ??? not a lot of help then.

Got the V5 back the other day and it says the car has 4 previous owners!!! I felt like kicking myself for not checking this with the dealer but I thought that a car from Mercedes approved that is less than 3 years old would have an impeccable history.

No service book; less than 3 years old, 4 prev owners, only 22k miles all sounds a bit dodgy to me.

Reject the car - 4 owners? Sounds like it's a lemon anyway if four other people have gotten rid of it in such a short space of time.

Take the car back with a formal letter telling them that material facts were not disclosed at the point of sale - ie 4 owners in 3 years and no original SH book - in fact they had "implied" one previous owner? - therefore the car is rejected. If they offer you the duplicate book and £1000 refund then might be worth taking - otherwise buy another "proper one".

When you were told by them that the same dealer had supplied it previously "therefore the service history is not a problem" I take it that you assumed that to mean the original new sale. Sounds like it had already had 3 owners by that time. Why not contact the previous owner and get the story from them.

Time to name and shame the dealer.

I bought a Honda a few years back with full main dealer service history and no book.

They gave me a continuation service book fully stamped up and a print out of all the services and work done. I was happy :)

Not for one second would I consider this to be a worthwhile resolution.
Take the car back. Get your money back. Start again. Good luck.

Yep the manager confirmed that service book is lost and they are getting a replacement book from Germany. They did state that they supplied the car last time so they have all the service details. I don't know how this will affect used value of the car when I sell it though.

Is that all the service details from when they last sold it or all the service details of the cars entire life? If the dealer has all the service details on record as they have stated and you have told them of your concern then why not authorise a computer print out for you?? What's so difficult about that ? Phone MB UK customer care again and ask what proof of identification/ownership they require to supply you with the full service history. If you have the option to return this car I would consider doing so since there's a lack of transparency to the whole affair. Unfortunately if people are evasive and not prepared to give you honest answers to legitimate enquiries it usually means they have something to hide.:(

Would I be right in thinking that a car with only 22k has probably had only one service? I will speak to customer care again on Monday. This has all come at a bad time for us; the reason we bought the car was to have a reliable workhorse that was not much fuss, we are both incredibly busy at the moment and simply have not got the time to visit the dealership.

I would have thought so, perhaps due a service soon though, all depends on type of use and how its been driven in the past

MERCEDES recommend a service visit at least once a year irrespective of mileage.

not necessarily Grober.. some of the diesel models can go up to two years.

When I got my car the service book wasn't supplied (wrong spare key too) - a replacement was provided together with a new key within 48 hours.

Unless MB have changed policy there appeared to be no problem in obtaining a service book apart from some admin.

Curious and curiouser.

I phoned Mercedes customer care today and they have no service records at all for my car. I have put forward an official complaint and stated that I would like to return the car.

A Mercedes approved used car that has 22k on the clock had 4 previous owners in 2 years 10 months, No service book and no electronic service record - and I guess therefore no guaranteed authentic mileage.

Doesn't sound too good does it?

No it does not!

I would make the time visit the dealership, even if you are too busy as it sounds like this will end up costing you ££££'s in the long run.

Black Hole Event Horizon Warning!

You must put your detailed complaint in writing immediately and send a copy to the dealer and MB UK by recorded delivery. You would be amazed at how complete telephone conversations can conveniently disappear in a black hole......

I know you're busy, but please take the time to set this down in writing, stating your rejection of the car and send it to them and MB recorded delivery.

The car does not sound good, but the dealer is going to be in a poor position as far as MB are concerned. I would expect you'd get a fairly speedy refund.
