Odd compressor like noise from brakes E-240

HI all

Sorry if this is posted in the wrong place, I am literally on the verge of handing over money on a private sale for a petrol E240 (02 reg) and one thing on the test drive worries me slightly. When the car has come to a complete rest, there is an odd little motor sound coming from the footwell, literally for about 5 seconds. The seller said its normal, and to do with the sensotronic system recharging.

However, should there be any noise at all, and does this indicate a fault?

Car is overall immaculate and well looked after, only been notching up 2,500 miles a year for the last 3 years, and has been maintained by a local Merc specialst, rather than main dealer.

However is there a fault I should be aware of?

Any help much appreciated. I know the 02 E class had a lot of issues, but can't seem to find anything on this specific issue, and I realise my description is a bit wooly but not sure how to describe a funny motor like sound without calling it so.

Sounds to me like it could be the ABS pump making the noise?

Obviously if it is then it works but perhaps a sensor causing it to run?

Just a maybe possibly could be!!

yes, thinking about it it does sound like the abs pump. Had an issue on Honda about 12 years ago that the pump used to run, and then the pressure would push the brake fluid back out of the resovoir and all over the engine.

Should the ABS pump cut in normally on the E class ? Have read elsewhere that this is a known issue and perhaps subject to a recall?

Drivers footwell. YOu can feel it vibrating in the brake pedal when stationary.

my w220 did this once, turned out to be a faulty rear wheel sensor.
It really should only power up when triggered by the wheel locking up.

Hmm. Is that likely to be expensive to get replaced? Am getting buyers nerves now. Doesnt help that I went out thinking I was looking at an E200 and it turned out to be an E240. Managed to haggle down on price, but having worries that its still over priced, fuel bill is going to be higher than I had budgeted and if there are sensor issues .....

Sensors are not really so expensive.

An indie could fit it for you or even supply and fit.

As for the car, why not post a link to the advert or site that it is on so you can get ideas & opinions from other members?
If it was being advertised as a 200 and is now a 240, does the seller know the car? Private or dealer?

Put you leg in here sir, I'll get the boy to operate the pulley!

If it's a w211 ( and it sounds like it is if it's got sensotronic ) then the 'buzzing' from the SBC unit is normal and it can be felt through the pedal but only just. If you sit in the car with the engine running and pump the brake pedal a few times it'll kick in again. It also runs when you unlock the car after it's been parked a wee while. Lift the bonnet and ask the seller to pump the brake pedal and the noise should be coming from the SBC unit at the front offside area in the engine bay. You can't miss it, big aluminium box with lots of hydraulic pipes coming out the top.

Definitely saw the aluminium box with lots of pipes, so guess that could be the source then. Could more feel it than hear it but definitely audible

It is a w211, I had a 2003 E240 for 6 years and I loved it. Do the checks I suggested but it sounds very like it's the sensotronic unit making the noise and it's completely normal. If you're parting with that amount of cash ask the seller to take you to the nearest MB workshop for a second opinion.

Make sure all recall work has been done...

Thanks. £9,700 is the lowest he'd go. I've tried the 270CDi and there was just too much diesel rumble through the steering wheel for my liking. I was toying with the E320 CDI but figured diesel just isnt relaxing enough for me hence going for the E200. E240 is only supposed to be 5mpg worse in economy than the 200, but will have to sleep on this. Only put down £50 deposit so if consensus is this is not a good deal then perhaps I need to walk away.

Personally I would go for the 320 cdi but then I would prefer the S Class and for a relaxing drive I don't think you can beat it.
You could pick up a decent W220 cdi for that money with the straight six engine for better economy, I think the 211 has the V6 diesel which is a bit thirstier.

Yes, I think I was thrown by the fact it wasnt what I thought it was, and looking on line the price for the E240 is less than I anticipated. Difficult to judge on the E200 as so few of them around. I think I'll try and last minute haggle tomorrow, and if he won't drop at least another £500 then could be cheaper to walk away and lose the £50 than overspend by hundreds.

Thanks for the direction nods!

With no disrespect to you, I personally believe the car is way way over priced and you would be better to walk away now. The car is over priced by thousands not hundreds!!

Say goodbye to your £50, give Jay a call or look at his website, he is a member here and has a good track record as an independant MB specialist repairer and car sales. You can be sure that he is not going to lift your leg either with sales or servicing / repairs especially as you are now part of 'The Club' !!
But that's just my opinion, I am sure that deep down you will find direction!!
