Our ML is no more!

Of course its gratifying to read you survived the collision shaken not stirred "Mr & Ms Bond"& family.
For me, this is why you buy a Benz!,
Top of the pile when it comes to passenger cell survivability in a collision .
As for the driver, he probably has been coached to back off and say NOTHING.
Its all about liability.
All the best

Glad everyone is ok,
it seems to be fashionable for people to drive toooo close.
As I drive South it gets worse.

Could rear DRL's have prevented this?

I think it's likely the first point you mention of driving far too close. She actually had her lights on but still didn't seem to keep him back sadly!

He hadn't committed an arrestable offence.

Presumably he passed the roadside breath test and was told to pass on his details but declined to do so after the Police left the scene?

He wasn't breathalysed, in fact the whole casual attitude of the Police has led us to raise a separate report as not only did he commit an offence (according to another office we spoke to), his lack of attention and cause of the accident was just, 'left to the insurers' as far as the Police was concerned. Despite the severity of the accident they didn't call an ambulance either. Oddly flippant.

My understanding is that it's an either/or situation - you have to either exchange details OR notify the police although many do both. Given that the police were in attendence and presumably recorded the incident then the requirement has been fulfilled.

Either way, that would get followed up after the event, along with any action as a result of their driving prowess. Probably a caution for driving without due care I'd expect.

The only details the Police had was his registration, he failed to give his details to us and all they did was tell him to give them to us. When he left they just shrugged it off.

I don't really care what the nambies think but some people just deserve a good kicking. Not even checking on Supermum and kiddies is just plain wrong, that's no way a man should behave.

Alex, you haven't mentioned anything about the good lady wife being shook up so I'm assuming she is made of stern stuff :) I know Mrs PMP would have put the vocal boot in if it was our kiddies in the back.

Well the guy wasn't there when I arrived to my other half's relief as she knew I'd have probably lost my cool. Maybe not land him one but certainly express myself somewhat haha

Mrs225 is ok, she's sore and was pretty dazed for a day or two but she's ok. I'll be giving her a nudge to do some driving though as I'm normally the driver and been off all week so she's not had to drive yet. She's good though thanks mate. :)

Just read this..........nasty one Alex. Glad to hear your missus is virtually unscathed.
That looked a hefty knock going on the damage.

The police don't appear to want to get involved in RTA's unless someone is badly injured.
Too much paperwork for them and no certainty of a conviction.

I am very surprised that both drivers were not subject to a roadside breath test.

I had assumed this was standard practice when the Police attended any road accident. I can quite understand you complaining about the lack of interest in a clear case of such poor driving resulting in injury to your wife.

My best wishes for her speedy and uneventful recovery.

Have.a word with his employers ,if he's not self employed. If it's one of the big haulage or 3PLs, they may jump on this given the shocking attitude of their employee

Good to hear that the family are well after such an impact.

The pics are the perfect answer to the question - "why do you need such a big , un-necessary vehicle" , a question that is asked a lot these days.

I remember sitting in the rear of our daughters Pug 107 and there must have been around 10" between my head and the glass tailgate , didnt fill me with too much confidence should there have been a "bump".

I was caught up in the M6 tailback in Cheshire yesterday morning.
The accident, Southbound, 2 wagons, a transit and a Merc. Merc man with serious injuries.
I was in a northbound crawl. I could see the van and I'm surprised anyone was cut out of that, but seemingly so.
anyway hordes of nothbounders (appropriate description) are to face prosecution for videoing and photoing the scene.

So looking at 2 wagons across all carriageways and a van crushed up against the central reservation my imagination creates the scenario of what may have occurred.

So we get moving, I'm in the outside lane moving faster than I more often do as getting my injectors up to Wigan before the tester left for home had some priority.
A large transit was up my chuff. I am travelling with the traffic but keeping a safe distance from he in front, and the middle lane is congested. So I employed use of my hazard flashers, he backed off but not for long.
Then a black Merc sped up he inside lane and made a few cars before slotting into the middle lane.

All this straight after we had all witnessed the aftermath of on the southbound.
While I feel there are too many of us on this planet I don't subscribe to reducing numbers that way, and especially not me as number 1.
Gits.

Some of you may have seen my post on another forum but thought I'd share here. Our ML came to it's end on Saturday although thankfully that was the only injury!!

My other half was driving clockwise on the M25, Saturday morning and it was raining. The rain suddenly came down really hard and the traffic slowed. The drive of a car transporter lorry decided not to bother and hit the back of the ML.

Thankfully other than whiplash that my partner sustained, our 3 year old daughter and 5 month old son were unharmed. The lorry driver was an ar$e though. I mean his driving clearly leaves a lot to be desired but his attitude was just as bad. Didn't come and check on anyone, when one of the witnesses said he was speeding he just walked off. The Police were there, instructed him to give his details but he failed to do so (reported) and left with his vehicle and the transporter. The insurers are handling everything now though, straight forward claim from his insurers, thankfully he was insured!

Amazingly it's testament to the ML's quality that despite being an inevitable write off, no one was hurt and all the doors could be opened normally. The boot clearly absorbed the energy as it was meant to, it snapped the pushchair in the boot but the backs of the seats didn't budge.

Got a GLC300 as a courtesy car so can't complain, then on the hunt for a replacement ML.

I assumed it was as well, just assumed it was standard in the case of an accident. I mean for all we know he could have had a few or a load the night before and not be fit to drive.

The Police's attitude seemed to be, 'Oh it's the weather'. Despite no one else crashing into each other!!

Funnily enough I messaged the firm that owns the lorry and what we were told by the company that recovered the vehicle. I found them on Facebook and messaged them. They have denied it being their driver or vehicle, despite the insurers confirming it today! Speaks volumes for the employer though.

It is a really good point about the whole vehicle size question. I mean we have three children from 5 months to 7 years old so need decent space in the back, an E Class would just about do it but the other half isn't much of a fan. The ML was her choice and to be fair it is a good car, I'm even more impressed after this has happened. I know modern cars are far safer but I'd be intrigued as to how well the likes of my mums Audi A1 would have faired in a similar accident, especially for rear passengers.

All this straight after we had all witnessed the aftermath of on the southbound.

Gits.

I recall something similar myself, huge accident on the other carriageway. Various emergency vehicles and the standard queue caused by rubber necking on my side. As the traffic clears, end up with a guy tailgating me. All after you've just seen the results of a serious crash. Utterly baffling.

glad to hear the family are ok!

Glad to see all yours are fine from what must have been a very traumatic experience for them. Sorry for the ML but look at it from the positive side, it's a new car time.

There is that one positive. Admittedly, we only had the last ML for 9 months and even my other half who's not a car nerd like me was sad and said, "I really loved that car!". The next one has big shoes to fill but we'll look for another ML from the same seller as he specialises in just MLs. Fingers crossed the insurance doesn't pull our pants down too badly.

Glad everyone’s OK. Shocking experience for the family, and the lorry drivers attitude is seemingly only too typical of plenty of the population these days.
Front and rear dash cams for me are pretty essential these days, and we’ll worth the outlay. Wouldn’t have prevented the accident, but the recording would be damming in any case of litigation. The volume of utterly ludicrous driving I witness these days is unbelievable.

. Fingers crossed the insurance doesn't pull our pants down too badly.
Get a valuation using your Reg# and details on webuyanycar.
Contrary to insurance valuations, prices of used cars are rising.
2 months ago I was offered over £2k more than I paid for my E63 two years ago. Insurance companies however have knocked over £7k off when it comes to valuations. I know which I'd have to pay if I were buying now and its not the insurance company quote.

Present adverts for vehicles for similar age, spec and equipment. It's down to them to put you back in an equivalent vehicle to the one their client destroyed, as much as they might try to claim otherwise. Any recent maintenance/tyres? Claim for those too.

About a month ago my brother in law crashed an older Peugeot he had bought 2 weeks previously, it was written off and Aviva insurance offered 75% of what he had paid, he disputed the valuation, submitted 2. Adverts for similar cars and got paid out £400 more than he had paid for it!

Friday was a dreadful day on the M6 - just north of the accident you came across there was another more serious one and 2 people were killed. Chaos ensued. I've lost count of the number of accidents causing closure of the M6 in the north in recent weeks. Quite what the problem is for the recent frequency I don't know. We got caught behind a multiple collision on the M60 the following day!

Thanks again for all the nice replies!

Have been looking around at adverts for comparable cars and it seems £9-10k is about what's needed to replace it like for like, even with a private sale. WBAC value it at just under £8k but of course they base prices in part on how easy a car is to shift on so it's a base figure but I'd expect even a part-ex price to be better.

We're hoping to hear today if the car is a total loss. We have our eye on another ML350cdi but a Grand model which is a bit higher than the previous one but lower miles and a higher spec. Let's see. :)

Well, unsurprisingly the ML has been declared a write off. Sad but after the damage done, we wouldn't have wanted it repaired anyway.

Good news, we received a pay out only £200 lower than what we paid for it last year so really couldn't complain. We went to view a couple of potential replacements today as there's a seller who specialises in just MLs about an hour from us (where we bought the last one). We actually went to look at another 2011 model with 66k on the clock, it wasn't as tidy as we'd hoped but really fell for this one. It's a 2011 ML350cdi Grand Edition, so a nice step up in spec on the last one and less miles. We upped our budget but I reckon it looks excellent.

Full leather with white piping looks excellent inside, leather dash to match and a kind of AMG/sporty steering wheel is a nice touch too. Those 21" tyres might be pricey but freshly powder coated so are blemish free!

Every cloud has a silver lining - that looks very smart 👍 Only trouble is, you're going to need a subscription order for Poorboys Black Hole...
