Whilst driving yesterday i noticed at any speed pre 20mph a P in a blue square kept appearing on the dash-after reading the owners manual turns out i've got parking assist:o(watched a video of it on you tube, car parking itself:eek:-might come in handy for female family members:D).

I have it in my car too, but I'm too scared to use it!

I'm guessing its really good for getting into those tight spots, but I doubt ill be using it anytime soon!

You must have read my mind Martin-those nice new shiny AMG'S in the hands of a car:eek:;)

In a few months' time I'll have this on both my cars (and boy, do I need it!), but while the Yeti will have an "active" system that does the steering for you, the SLK is only offered with "parking guidance", which shows you when to steer and by how much. If MB have the "active" technology, why not make it available on all their cars? :(

When I discovered that the Yeti was available with Park Assist my first thoughts were of a piece on Top Gear a while ago:

So I asked the salesman to demonstrate it to me, and I was actually very impressed with how things had moved on. No faffing about with lining up a target box with the space, he just pressed the parking button, put it in reverse and the car went in without any fuss. That was in a Superb, which only handles the reversing manoeuvre, while the Yeti will also straighten the car up for you.

How annoying, then, to find that the SL will do all of the above, and will also take the car out of the parking space for you, whereas the SLK just shows you a couple of lines and lets you get on with it yourself.

Ahhh bless, and there was me thinking parallel parking was a driving test requirement. :D

Not in my day, it wasn't!

Don't get me wrong, I can manage to park the car, but I'm hopeless at judging distances and steering angles accurately. For instance, I always feel I need to leave more room than necessary to avoid clipping the bumper of the car in front when swinging into (or out of) a space.

I thought the assist package, where it actually parks for you, was only on the (smaller A and B classes?) that have electric steering?

I'm pretty sure on bigger cars, or those with hydraulic steering like E Classes, the Parking Assist only guides you, showing how much steering input and direction to apply to get into the given space?

I may be wrong but I think that's how it works on my E-coupe and assume its because the car can only do it for you if there's an electric motor on the steering column.

The SL has it, so perhaps that has electric steering now. :dk:
