Patagonia Special TONITE!

On the balance of probabilities... JC went for a poke and got a big shove.

No explanation for the presence of the fabricated BE....... plates from JC.

Is any needed?

Within the normal puerile context of the show it was presumably like the 'Peugeot' windcsreen sticker and planned for application to a car at some point for the same purposes as an allegedly unscripted prank by two of the team on their 'unsuspecting' colleague.

Not quite sure what you're saying here. Do you mean they decided on a 928 then deliberately picked one that had a registration they thought might wind people up? Or that they somehow searched through the number plates for every cheap V8-engined car for sale in the UK till they found one they liked, which happened to be on a 928? :dk:

I have no idea how they did it but refuse to believe in the coincidence on this one. Especially as they have form and it is exactly the sort of stunt they like to play.
No way ... Will believe in unicorns before I believe this.

If the plate had been the 'W3 W0N' mentioned, or something similar, then I would agree. The 'BE11 END' plate is a good example. But IMO the (genuine) registration on the Porsche simply wasn't obvious enough for them to have put in that amount of effort.

I guess we all look at it different ... I can't think of many more suitable plates. 982 FLK shouts 1982 Falklands to me ..

I bet they would have done it in a reliant robin if they found a plate referring to Thatcher!

It is certainly believable that JC and crew planned a jibe; he has history of doing so. Equally, level headed Latin Americans is a misnomer of the first order; add fiery temperament to old gripes to political manoeuvrings and mob rule is the result.
A bit of a chicken an egg situation; JC trying it on and the Argentinians spoiling for trouble and finding an excuse………………my suspicion is that had JC and crew flew Argentinian flags, painted the cars in the flag colours, played nothing but the national anthem on their stereos and worn national dress, there would still have been trouble.
Both sides were intent on setting the other up but in different ways. JMO.

When TG did the American special, we were meant to believe that the petrol station incident was real - we later find out that it was fabricated.

This incident looks far more real and terrifying - but who knows?

I think markjay is probably right in post #121.

And to every researcher, journalist, etc looking for a cheap gag or headline.

I suspect a good 75% of people think the same too ... We should start one of those voting threads maybe for a wider consensus?

I know there are people out there believing in Bigfoot so being generous :)

What percentage of the general UK population do you think would actually know the year of the Falklands War?

Persumably a few more % after the TG special was broadcast than before?

IIRC we were told that it was the Falklands CONFLICT at the time…

Spin doctors, eh?

Yup! For example though I was a working adult at the time and fairly interested in what was going on, but I still wouldn't have been able to give the exact year now. Anyone under 33 wasn't even born then, and I doubt it gets covered much at school! So I reckon only a tiny proportion of people would associate the number 982 with the Falklands.

Did they find the plate and then plan the trip around it?

As soon as I saw the plate the reference was obvious. Anyone old enough (just about any adult as it isn't as if the Falkland's war has never been mentioned since it ended) to know of the conflict knew it was in the early 80s - 82 then!
The other plate is less obvious - to us, but not to those in that port.
