I feel I am throwing a handgrenade into a chicken coup on this one....
but....
Whats the general feeling on buying a pattern MAF ?
Experiences good or bad on OEM V's Pattern

Hi there, I bought one recently that was advertised as a bosch but when it arrived it was a pattern part. The fit of the maf into its housing was a little loose which could let unmetered air in so sent it back.Basically i wouldn't bother. Its not something you will need to replace often so in my opinion its worth the expense of genuine one.

Definitely stick to OEM parts like these.
Pattern parts are false economy on a part like this

Use the replaceable element rather than the whole unit-its cheaper. Genuine Bosch or Pierburg -not worth spending money on anything else imho. Be very careful of where you buy/ unit provenance- lots of cheap Chinese knock-offs on EBAY for example.

^ Where's the best place to buy just the 'replaceable element' and how hard is it to change?

May be worth knowing for the future... (hopefully I will never need it!)

Answer is I don't know -but I doubt it. You can use your original MB or Bosch part no on the MAF unit to cross reference any new sensor insert. I posted the link above merely as an illustration as to what's involved in changing it. Sorry if that confused things for you.

I replaced the complete MAF unit (Bosch) on our 1999 SLK230K last year. I did try and source a new sensor but could only get the complete unit. It was around £140-150 from ECP. The best thing to do is to take the old unit off (large clip one end and pipe with jubilee clip on the other then remove the electrical connector) and make a note of the part numbers. If it's the original it will have the MB and Bosch part no. You just need to quote the Bosch one to ECP. If you can get the sensor they are easy to replace. Again you need to remove the complete unit as it would probably be a fiddle in situ. The sensor is held in with 2 x secure torx screws (different from a normal torx). Apparently the sensors are about half the price but nobody wants to sell them (I even tried out local Bosch service centre).

oem all the way my 202 had a pattern maf on when i got it back in 06, i took it off and put a stock benz one on, they really dont last that long either where a stock one can go for at least 60-100k miles

Hi,
I,m probably gonna get slated here but I replaced my C230K one about 80-90,000 miles ago, with a cheap E-bay item and it is still going strong, though having spent time on this and the other forum I would,nt touch a non OEM spec MAF now, after having read the reports from people on the pattern ones, I believe I have just been incredibly lucky My C43 one went, I bought a gen MB one rather than a cheap e-bay item.

Right then ....seems a blindman could tell which to choose...
Thanks for all the input....

..
now where's my wallet:crazy:
