Performance Headers

Hi DRBC

I've bought the brake set and I'm running 19s already.

I'll post up how it's done once my headers are finnished. As ususal cost will be the defining issue but hopefully soon the calipers will be mounted.

Hi Andy

Interesting reading. I too suffered a few set backs. The W202 conversion is an easier one simply because you can use your original ECU.
I'll post up soon how I did mine. Bearing in mind it was a couple of years ago and at that time people over here didn't have much experience.

Ps, once done isn't she a BEAST!!

HI Gazza

Nice car!

I was at EMP Performance a little while back when they showed me what a customer had ordered for their car. I now realize that those exhaust tips were for you!

I'll have to start an album over on this site too.

I (we) will very much appreciate the information of this brake conversion and installation. However, apart from the looks of an 8 pot caliper with nisc disc and appropriate wheel diameter. what is the use of such a conversion if you are not going to track the car? A secondary concern, what about the unsprung weight issues and general handling as I can imagine such a conversion is going to add some serious weight in the corners, not unless you choose PCCB disks  which would be around 50% lighter than a metal disc:confused:

Hi DRB

I do plan on tracking the car, I have uprated Bilstein shocks and Eibach springs. I also have Bilsteins sway bars front and rear as well as custom made strut braces front and rear.

The brake feel is so much better when you are not using all of your braking power. Imagine just grazing the pedal to stop the car from a moderate speed. Also don't forget about my engine conversion. Just flexing your toe amounts to alot more speed. My engine by the way isn't standard and makes more power than a normal NA AMG.

I drive fast (not dangerously) on the road and find that the EBC 320mm discs I'm using are good but not great (they start to smoke when pushed hard and a couple of times I have had a soft pedal.
The weight I have been told is neligable due to the power the car makes.

The reason I'm able to do this conversion is because so far the parts have been cheap. If you were to do this from scratch it would cost ££££s!

"Copy and Paste, remember that"!

Sorry, I was just talking to myself after posting this up twice already and it not saving. I should have done this at 9pm.

Hi Guys and Girls

It's a week late, but we have touch down! EMP Performance have finnished making and have installed my new headers this evening.:bannana:
It was late due to the snow slowing parts and because EMP have not made headers for a Mercedes in such tight confinements before.

Tomorrow they will make the underside pipes and then it'll be completely finnished.

My performance manifold is made from aircraft grade steel which is 2mm thick, has mandrel bends and tig welds. The port openings are 1.75in, flowing into four separate branches then into a 2.5in collector. The 2.5in down pipe will connect to two 200 cell 'bullet' cats before flowing into a gradual custom 'Y' pipe, which opens to 3ins before ending at my new back box with twin exits.

I can't wait to hear the sound. It should have a nice deep tone. My previous headers from AMS had a deep tone, but because these new headers are larger the note would have changed.
I won't feel much difference (hopefully I will) until I get a new custom tune.

Here's a sneak preview of the passenger header branch (I think). There are more pictures but they are on EMPs camera which they said they would put on a disc for me.

If I get some time before Christmas I'll get my custom 8 pot Brembo brakes done.:)

Enjoy!

Hi bud,
Are the manifolds fitted yet? They look the bizz.

Hi Andy,

Yes, the headers are done and have been fitted.

I got my car back just this afternoon. It should have been last week but I gave myself an early Christmas present!

Courtasy of EMP Performance again. Can you guess?:D

What I can tell you is the sound is fantastic!! It's a mix of American muscle with Merc AMG 63.
It's a little quieter at tick over than my last headers which surprised me, but when blipped it's just as loud as before. On cruising speeds there is a nice rumble, (not droning but pleasant back ground noise) there is a deeper tone too, just a few octaves lower. I'm sure once the ECU has adjusted the note will change again.

Because they are tubular headers there is an accompaniment of a 'whooshing' noise like air escaping when you press the pedal whilst driving. This I'm told is the sound of air mixing in the tubes.

At the moment the 'bullet' cats are on back order till January '11. I'm sure that when put on they will give me a little more low down torque (not that I'm missing much). They will quieten the exhaust a bit too, although I quite like the loud voice!

Straight away I can feel a performance gain, it's probably not much as I haven't had a chance to stretch it's legs because of the snow. But torque IS definately up.

After the New Year when the cats are on I will custom tune the ECU and be able to report on the gains with conclusive evidence. But by the seat of the pants meter I'm happy.

In my excitement I forgot to get the pictures to post. If I can't get them before Christmas I'll post up asap.

I know this is an expensive mod, but it was custom built, and from what I've read across the pond, they would have paid double for something of this quality! So for now I'm happy.:thumb:

Hi Paul,
Good to read your comments and look forward to other news as they come in :thumb:
P.S. Can say how much your exhaust and conversion cost you? If you don't want to post you can sent a PM. Indeed exhaust systems for a C43 are difficult to find and becoming rare like hens teeth IMO

Hi DRB

EMP Performance gave me a good price for my headers, £1600. They were willing to take on my next project too. After negotiations they made me an offer I couldn't refuse.;)

Check out the wheels and tyre threads!

Hi Paul,

If poss could you upload some videos/sounds of the car? Cheers

Hi nadeem and DRB,

Unfortunately I don't own a camera, but over the holidays I'll try and borrow one.

Paul, doesn't your mobile have a video option? may not be top quality but could give some understandable sounds :D

True. I'll try out tomorrow.

Hi Guys,

Over Christmas I recorded a camera phone video, it wasn't the greatest sound but the picture was ok. I then saved it in my videos on the computer, but when I tried to upload it, the forum attachments wouldn't let me.

Is there a certain method in doing so?

Hi Pauljay,
Dodn't know if posting a video like pictures directly is possible on here. I suppose you need to deposit your video on a site like Photobucket ou Youtube and copy the link to your post :thumb:

Hi DRB

I also tried opening an account on Youtube. I never recieved their confirmation email and my computer said I was being redirected from their main site and advised not to continue.:dk:

Never mind guys, I'll find another way. When I do I'll post it.

I tried again. Hopefully this works!

This is the video I took after work before Christmas. I don't normally rev my car from cold, but I took it up to 3500rpms.

Sorry for my camera phone being too close! The sound isn't great but you get an idea.:)

I'll try and post a better sound quality soon as this is quite harsh and not a true representation!
