Hello everyone, im new on here as on Friday i pick up my first Mercedes, in the form of a 2001 black W210 E320 CDi Avantgarde!

I've had a far few cars for my age (22) ranging from a 1.8 hardback freelander to a 1989 Jaguar Sovereign 2.9 (my favourite one so far) and recently have become a big German car fan. My last 3 cars were all VAG group cars (a 2002 VW Bora, 1990 VW Corrado 16v and a 1998 Audi A4 1.8ts) and i thought that i would finally step things up a bit and buy a mercedes. So after much hunting and talking to my parents (who are both mercedes owners) i found this E class, went to view it and am now waiting like a child to collect it!

this is it, but i will have more pics once ive picked it up!

my parents have a W208 CLK 320k, a W163 ML270 CDI and my personal favourite, an R230 SL500. We've also had an SL350 R230, but that met an untimely end after a dispute with a telegraph pole, then a ditch and finally ending up in a hedge on the other side (My father was fine though, not a scratch!) and a R129 SL320

here are some pics of their cars too:

and then the previous SL350:

I'll probably be on here asking a few tech Q's after i've picked it up!

thanks,
Jim

Welcome to the forum. Enjoy the 210 and keep your eys open for the inevitable rust!

Welcome , I'm sure you'll enjoy the car !

Welcome to the forum. Is nice to see another mercedes family

They rust

lots

all over the place!

But yours looks lovely so maybe it has been done by a previous owner?

Enjoy it.

cheers for teh welcome, and thanks for the rust tip, we went over the car with a fine tooth comb when we went to look at it and there no signs of bubbling or anything (after owning the corrado and the jag, i always keep an eye out for the rust!) but it's under warrenty so i'll keep on it! the car is lovely though, not a scratch or ding anywhere, and the interior has no wear at all!

does anyone know the mapping choices for the 320cdi engine at all? i don't want to mess with it too much so i lose economy etc... but would like a bit more poke!

yeah, we've done the whole land rover/range rover thing, also had BMW's, lexus' and what not, but we've had the least problems with the mercedes brand so , touch wood, i should be here for a while!

Welcome to the forum. It's clear that your family have good taste in cars. :)

Anyway enjoy your new car.

Hi and welcome,
You car will certainly be exceptional if it is not suffering from the dreaded rust bug.

I am envious :)

Welcome, i have a real soft spot for the W210 having sold one last year. Very comfortable cars and i almost preferred it to my CLK.

I found the E really similar to my mothers CLK to drive, just a bit bigger, that was one of the main reasons i chose it over a E39 530d BMW and a GS300 lexus. I'd driven the CLK a quite a few times on long drives and it was really comfy, the E class just seems bit more spacious but the driving position is almost identical IMO.

Emm...pull back the rubber on the top of each door. If there's no rust there then that is a good example.

3 of my doors have/had rust.

One you could see the rust and spent a whole weekend sorting it out; stripping door back, rubbing down, treating the rust, priming and then base coat. the following weekend laquared and then coated the whole section under the rubber seal with dinitrol cavitiy wax and then brushed into the rubber seal more wax before putting it back on. this led to lots of running wax but a least I knew that everything was coated and also acted as a minimal adhesive for the rubber to the top of the door which keeps the water out.

The second one you could only see the rust when lifting the rubber, so was a fairly easy repair as was able to respray without affecting the front face of the door frame. Again same process as above for the wax.

The third door is in the same condition as the 2nd one was, but yet to be done due to the weather, work, family.

The forth door has no signs of rust but I'll wax up when I get a chance to help it along.

thanks guys, my father is really into them, he's driven all the rest from a lexus sc430, jag XK, bmw 650 and all that, and he just really like the mercedes, especially for the driving and mileage he does, my mum just likes them because she can fit all the dogs in the ML and have the roof off of the CLK when the sun comes out haha! she wants an SLK next as she thinks the CLK is too big now she has the ML aswell! I just cant wait to pick up my E class tomorrow, i've been like a child at christmas the last few days, i always am when im going to collect a new car!!! :)
