Picking up my first Mercedes on Friday!!!

Welcome to the forum, I've just recently come back here, and it really is a super forum, better than BMW one :D that's a for sure, really nice cars your family have:thumb:

as has been said on here already there are 3 top things to check out when buying a used w210; in order they are rust, rust and rust.
If yours has no dings and no scratches and it is 8 yrs old then it is a pretty sure bet that it has been resprayed.
If you have found the non rusty one I would take it back to Merc they may want to have a look. :)
Seriously do check it properly before parting with your cash. As R21ts said pull back the door rubbers at the top; that will give you a good idea.

And whatever you do don't do a forum search for "perch". :D

Welcome.

P.S. What did your father say to you after he extracted himself from the passenger side of the SL. :D

3 of my doors have/had rust.

One you could see the rust and spent a whole weekend sorting it out; stripping door back, rubbing down, treating the rust, priming and then base coat. the following weekend laquared and then coated the whole section under the rubber seal with dinitrol cavitiy wax and then brushed into the rubber seal more wax before putting it back on. this led to lots of running wax but a least I knew that everything was coated and also acted as a minimal adhesive for the rubber to the top of the door which keeps the water out.

The second one you could only see the rust when lifting the rubber, so was a fairly easy repair as was able to respray without affecting the front face of the door frame. Again same process as above for the wax.

The third door is in the same condition as the 2nd one was, but yet to be done due to the weather, work, family.

The forth door has no signs of rust but I'll wax up when I get a chance to help it along.

Only 4 of mine have rust!! How do you remove the rubber to treat the rust??

Welcome to the forum, don't mind the doom rust meisters! Enjoy your new E class, they are amazingly comfortable cars.

He looked pretty shocked to be honest, i was in my corrado at the time, he went straight through a telegraph pole and snapped it clean in half! he was joking about it but you could see he was pretty shaken, but he's all good now and got a much nicer SL after!

Is it actually possible for a 22 yr old to get insured on a Merc 320Cdi?

It is indeed, at a good price too! i've always had my insurance in my own name and fully comp since i bought my freelander when i was 17, so i have 4 NCB, only one insurer took the mick with a quote and that was Aviva (Norwish union) who quoted me £4500 a year! Im also insured on my families ML and my mums CLK 230k cabby - still waiting for the old man to put me on his SL, might be a while though haha!

The rubber door seals will put out with ease, but start from a corner and use a screwdriver to prise it out of the channel and then the rest will come out a lot easier.

To put them back on, hook the top part of the rubber seal into the channel and then, using a blunt wide blade screwdriver, push the bottom of the rubber in. It'll be apparent when you do it.

I will have to use your address for my insurance!;)
Where i live you will get 4 figure quotes all day long for a 25 yr old insuring something as humble as a A140:crazy:

so i didn't pick up the E class on friday, instead i got to waste a days holiday sitting at home constantly trying to get through to the dealer to find out at about 5.15 that there was a problem with the V5 so they would have to go to the nearest DVLA office on Monday to get it sorted...good times. at least in return he has offered to fill the tank with deisel for me before i collect it, not the best apoligy, but a token non the less. im probably going to wash the other three today, might put some pictures up later if i can find my camera!

What sort of a "problem" with a V5 stops a dealer selling a car to the new owner? The "problem" with the V5 can be put right at the same time as the transfer of keeper.....unless there is something more ominous going on. I would do some more digging if I were you.

apparently the car was registered as a disabled use vehicle, so road tax is free, but the dealer were paying to have the car taxed and have to transfer the car back to general public use first, but they only realised this about an hour before i was meant to collect.

I have finally got my E320 CDI!

Picked it up at about 6.00 tonight after a lot of messing about at the dealer!

The car is beautiful, and shines! had a good look over the body with the man at the dealer, and it does have 2 spots of the dredded E class rust, but both are on the arches and have been treated and protected, i was also told that this will fall into warranty if it spreads!

I averaged at 38mpg on the drive home and am all round happy as larry with my new baby!

I'll post some pics up as soon as i stop driving it and find my camera!

Nice one Jimmy. Forget what folk tell you about an E class being an old mans car (I get this sh** all the time of my mates). They're just jealous. Enjoy your new car :D

Great stuff glad your happy and it turned out good in the end.

38 mpg sounds way to good given, its a free tank and its a new car

Go and have some fun :)

(but please take care and obey the speed limits)
