Pic's of my new car.... S65AMG V12 Twin Turbo W221

Those wheels on your previous car, they look like X166 21” AMG wheels?

If so, I actually have a good set of these spare. If you’re particularly interested I am sure we could work something out
They’re facelift W164 21” AMG wheels. If you look, the profile of the wheel is different at the centre.

The X166 wheel has a defined edge to the diamond face, with the area around the bolt holes painted.

The W164 wheel is is much rounder in profile, and is diamond cut all the way to the centre of the wheel.

You are right, they are x166 wheels and I would be interested in the set you have but what have you started! If I buy the wheels that means I must buy the facelift AMG kit also 😆
I will send you a pm
The solution might be for you to buy the X166 wheels from Will, and then swap them for my W166 wheels. Then you have what you had before.

Well spotted :)

The spokes look thinner on the W166 vs X166 design?

I’ve had another look and I think the 5-spoke X166 21” AMG wheels I have are actually different to both of those. Will need to check as I’ve had them in storage for quite a long time but I think they are these ones:

I think the wheels Sam are after are still 166 wheels but from the ML63?

Sam - I’m happy to check at the weekend for you, I have had them stored for 2+ years now, I think they’re the ones in my first link above :thumb:

@Will which wheels are you running at the moment?

Excellent car! (I am biased). I have lived with mine now for very 7 years, time does fly.

Have done loads but its been fairly reliable!

Enjoy!

Hi Rob,

I’ve got these ones fitted, same wheels it’s had from factory (I think they were a cost option on the GL63)

I picked up a spare set of X166 21” AMG wheels a few years back as I thought it’s inevitable that the original ones would need a refurb at some point, but as they were diamond cut I’ve been mindful to not do this until necessary (they’re not perfect but still look very presentable and have managed to avoid kerbs!)

Sad to say the car isn’t as clean at the moment but it still scrubs up well when I get the chance!

Handsome car. Those wheels look great 👍🏻

Love those M3 s Looks like you had a thing for CSL alloys ;)

Thank you! I should have kept the blue one as it was a very rare car and that was the only M3 I put CSL wheels on. They looked great on that car. Everyone seems to love the CSL wheels or any other parts that the CSL has 😊
I wish I bought a CSL when I bought my first M3. They were around £27k at the time.... If only we would know what some cars would be worth in years to come!

Thank you for clearing that us @Bobby Dazzler .

If it's not too much trouble, that would be great. Please send me a pic and let me know what sort of price you have in mind :)

Not at all, I was 23 when the SL arrived on the driveway. Age is no barrier (except possibly for insurance!), drive what you fancy.

I've never been one to buy a car based on what people think a person should have at a certain age. Like you said, just drive what you fancy :)
Out of all the cars I've owned over the years, the S600 and the S65AMG have been the cheapest cars to insure . The S600 was £450 fully comp and the S65AMG is £550 fully comp. M3's were the highest, £1500+

This looks great and I really like the wheels!
Proper beast of a car!

Stay with the weels you have. I know i'm biased but i wasn't a fan of the ones you had on the 600. As i mentione the ones you have look great on the pre-facelift 221.

I won’t sell the oem wheels as like you say, for the prefacelift 221 does look very nice with this alloys.
I’ll see how I feel 6 months down the line 😁

The other day I got a call from Mercedes saying some of the parts I had ordered arrived. I’m still waiting for a few more parts but they’re still at Mercedes in Germany.
You wouldn’t believe the price for the little items that are inside the tubes and most people wouldn’t even notice them once fitted but OCD kicks in and I can’t help myself

Oh I would. Some parts MB take the absolute p*ss on, beyond ridiculous.

You're right! I guess they know for some things we have no other choice.

While I was at the dealer, I asked one of the service advisors to get a price for a gearbox oil and oil filter change. He didn't even ask for the car reg but only asked what car it was. I said it's an S65AMG. '' Oh the price for that is around £400 or a bit more''.
I asked why is it double the price when I only paid nearly £200 for my S600 which has the exact same gearbox?
It was at this moment that the guy started talking nonsense. ''Oh it's because the oil filter sits on a different place and that the gearbox is different''. I had to tell the guy that they're actually the same boxes. He realised that I understood he was talking rubbish and just said, '' It's because this is an AMG, that's why the price is different''. I said, well that's better. Just tell me I have to pay double the price because of the three letters [ AMG ]. No need to say they're different boxes when we both know they are the same!

I think the real explanation is you got the bargain of the century on the S600!

To be honest, I did think £200 was a good deal from the dealer that's why I want to change the gearbox oil on the new car. I have the paperwork that it was changed a year ago but I thought for £200 I might as well get Mercedes to do it.
In that case, I shouldn't complain 😁

At the main dealer I suspect that the going rate is closer to £400 than it is £200 for any model, never mind flagship models. Did they come back and give you a quote?

You could ask for pricing from other main dealers, Mercedes specialists and transmission specialists, so you have a feel for pricing on your model in your area.

For as long as I’ve been driving Mercedes, I don’t think I’ve ever paid less than £200 for a transmission service on any model, even at transmission specialists.
