Anybody know what the nut does on the top of the fuel filter. (E300D 1995).
It says shut or something on it.
Does it shut off the fuel flow or something?

Regards

Ian

Does that mean it needs to be in the closed position (fully screwed in) for normal running?

It's the manual fuel shut-off, for use if the solenoid one fails and you can't shut the engine down. If you screw it right in, you won't get any fuel flow. It should be fully un-screwed.

^^^ What he said

The earlier cars had a manual shutoff switch under the manifold on the IP

BTW, the fuel shutoffs on late E300 Ds have been known to leak & need replacing

Many thanks for the replies.

I replaced the filter last week and left the shut off valve fully open.

For some reason when i started it yesterday the engine faltered and stalled under load, so i'm assuming i did not bleed the system through long enough, even though i filled the new filter with fresh diesel.

Air leaks normally start after the system's been disturbed. You'll want to look at all the pipework and replace all the O rings. When these cars don't want to start they are seriously annoying. Do the job roperly and the car will be OK for another 10 years

Do a search on the forum and you'll find lots of info
