Those that know me will surely agree that, by my standards, our ML63 has lasted very well indeed - I'm approaching 10 months in ONE car  Ha....and it's not even mine, but the missus takes what she's given ;)

Anyway, circumstances have dictated this rather than any specific desire to change the car - in fact, I actually don't really want to change it because a) it's one of the most impressive all rounders we've ever had and b) it's the perfect compliment to my imminent AMG GT.

However, as well as being car-less (having sold my SLS back in November and rocking around in whatever car MB give me....presently another ML!), I'm also currently homeless  Kind of. I had the opportunity earlier this year to get access to a plot with planning permission (in an area of my village that I've aspired to live in) to design and build my own house. These opportunities in life don't come round very often and it should prove to be shrewd investment. So, I sold our house (in 4 hours, not bad for a little Leicestershire village!) and moved in with in-laws to help fund this project. Problem is, we want everything on this new build (it's so much cheaper doing everything now rather than later) and this isn't doing the budget any good so unfortunately, something's got to give. And after much thought it's the ML which will bite the dust :(

I've got a reasonable amount of equity in it which I can plough into the build and I've considered all manner of alternatives from the usual suspects of BMW, Jag, Audi, Merc etc.....but I'm not really a VAG fan, I've had most iterations of the current BMW range so am a bit bored of them and theres not much else that takes our fancy. The key criteria being it had to be a petrol, have 4 seats, a decent sized boot. It also had to be relatively modest for work purposes, a nice refined cruiser and have decent spec. We very nearly plumped for a brand new E400 coupe as the deals on these are phenomenal but in the end, I wanted something a bit more....fruity. So, with all that in mind, what better fit than a facelift E63 AMG?? :p Sensible eh?

And I think I've just done a deal on one of the cheapest facelift cars in the UK, subject to seeing the car at the weekend. Not bad for a one year old car with 11k on the clock and some nifty options....diamond white paint, pan roof and fully dynamic air conditioned seats being notable inclusions :D

Not sure I'm going to enjoy slumming it in the E63 as much as lording it up in the ML but it's a means to an end and a change is as good as anything.

Palm, let me get this right.

You got rid of the ML to free up some cash and bought a one year old E63 ??

That's man maths at its very best surely :D:D

Yeah it's great isn't it :D But it works....money in the bank and LESS monthly outgoings. Good eh!

Of course, the way it's worked is that I paid a mega dipper on the ML (which was a much more expensive car and has held it's money surprisingly well). I'm paying less up-front on a much cheaper (albeit newer) E63 hence the cash freed up. I could've just refinanced the ML I guess, but thats just so boring.

Good effort mate.

Hope the build is going well btw :thumb:

And I hope you do a build thread.

Lots to photograph and post :thumb:.

Is a car forum the place to post about building a house :dk:

Build is going well. I think. I don't really know, I've never done this before.

But dealing with an independent builder is, quite frankly, awesome. He's a local and well known/respected builder and it was his plot where he was going to build his chosen design. But I was introduced to him early enough to enable me to change, err....everything! And he's accommodating all and everything we want and charging very reasonably. House is just waiting for it's roof now so hoping to be in for end of August

I did a refurb thread over a period of a few months and it seemed well received. It's what off topic is all about.

Lots of house fans on here.

Sounds great, get some pics up of the E63 and a thread started about the build

I'm looking forward to read about both.

I take it you are fitting a revolving door in the garage :)

There's always the OT forum for anything off topic. Get it banged in there

Remember, you can never have too many plug sockets.

Always room for more double sockets.:D

Yes and Ethernet !

Put Ethernet everywhere you can and always more than you think you might need :)

Good lord, you guys are more interested in a house than the car

OK, so I've written a little story and added some pictures.....just for you. And maybe because I'm just a little excited :p, although the end seems a such a looooong way away.

As for sockets....yes, I'm planning my electrical design and I think I need something like 14 doubles in the living room alone! But I'll be making sure that I have no need for any adaptor plugs or extension sockets and all my home cinema wiring will be integrated (in fact, my surround speakers will be installation speakers in the ceiling so feel free to recommend away!). And then theres the wiring for electric blinds, feature lighting and...and..and..and.......

And as for Ethernet, you're not the first people to mention this but please explain to me why exactly I need it when I have a wifi network (that seems to work just fine)? Although saying that, I've also been told that because I have underfloor heating it can affect the wireless so I may need a couple of routers? Maybe you guys have more stuff to plug in than I do!

Checked out the E63 today. And not really sure what I'm going to do now.

The car itself drives very well (E's always do, they're lovely engineered things) and the build quality was probably a step up from the ML (it felt amazingly solid....you can definitely tell one's constructed in the USA, the other in Germany!). Also, as a thing to 'drive', it is better than the ML...although that should be a given because it's a car, not a truck! The E's interior feels more special - in particular, the air conditioned dynamic seats are phenomenal and the dash is nappa leather rather than the stitched bull anus skin on the ML. Strangely, given they have identical engines, it sounds better (harder edged)....must be the exhaust design.

But the E63 definitely has less presence and 'lording it up' :D potential compared to the ML and, after 10 months under my care, it's condition wasn't up to the ML's standards (despite having significantly lower mileage) - it's a London-registered car so I guess I should be surprised that 3/4 wheels had been refurbed....unfortunately very badly. Bodywork needs some TLC but nothing I can't sort and the interior was spot on except for an utterly atrocious steering wheel - the alcantara bits looked rotten (I just can't understand how an 11k mile car has such a bad steering wheel?!?!). It also needed 4 new tyres. To be fair, the dealer agreed the steering wheel wasn't good enough and said they'd replace it and the all tyres. I've asked them to get the wheels refurbed properly which they're less happy about (to be fair, most people probably wouldn't notice) but are getting back to me on Monday.

So, not sure what I'll do now - there's bit's I prefer to the ML such as how it drives, the outstanding seats and build quality but in other areas, the ML is far superior, particularly in terms of practicality and it definitely stands out more. I actually expect the E63 to be as good as it is, whereas the ML's capability is almost an engineering masterpiece given what it can do (in spite of it's size and weight). Choices choices.....

An E63 wagon would give you all of the above and them some more, particularly on the practicality front :thumb:

I agree John, and I also think the estate looks better (although still nowhere near as imposing as the ML). However, it's officially the missus's car and she's having none of it....apparently an E class estate is not something she wants to rock around in. Ungrateful madam.

I also can't find a (cheap enough) estate with those seats....which I have to admit was a real draw of this car. Driving it today, they were as good as I remembered them.

I think I may have closed the deal down on this today - the dealer have done everything I've asked from replacing the steering wheel, new rear tyres and even replacing 3 of the wheels.

I'm just waiting on confirmation that they're doing the front tyres too.

Wow! Now that looks the nuts
Is that Diamond White or the basic white? I'm sure they'll replace the front tyres if they've done everything else for you already...

Diamond White - see post #1
