I agree that the best place to look it's : NewReg
Just thought. i seen Porsche today, number plates: FBI. I could imagine price...probably you could buy another Porsche
Best advice is to shop around, as in many cases the same plates are on offer by several dealers at varying prices (and may even be available direct from the DVLA). Only this week I found another dealer had a plate for almost £2000 less than what NewReg were asking all-in.

I beleive that all plates have to come from the DVLA originally so they should always be cheaper from there unless the dealer is taking a loss, in which case they may make up the loss on extra's or are selling second hand numbers. In which case you will probably never know what price you should be paying.
I got mine from the DVLA for £450 and happy with that.
I got my plate through Elite Registrations about 10 years ago.
Was worried at first as the plate was expensive . .but the service was excellent and they send me an excellent qtr mag every year since I bought it. .
Excellent service.

Yes, owner Tony Hill was one of the first to become established as a number plate dealer, and went through a lot of pain in the early days when the DVLC (as it was then) was not at all interesting in supporting the whole concept of registration transfers. He wrote quite an interesting account of his experiences, and was instrumental in persuading the DVLC to at least adopt a consistent, formalised transfer process.
Elite Registations are perhaps a little behind the curve these days in terms of the scale of their business, but they do have an excellent reputation for service and their plates are usually very fairly priced.
