Proposed changes to the MOT Test.

If you are trying to propose a point as fact, it is YOU who needs to back it up with evidence, not our job to find the evidence for you.

Seems to be a recurring theme at the moment
think we both need to back up what we say with evidence, as i see it the jury is still out on this one.. don't feel intimidated by these so call mechanic/MOT testers on here, if they find they are wrong they blame anyone else but themselfs... only grand prix engines get treated bad, thats because they fall to bits after the finish line.. normal Engines should be looked after and treated with respect.. just my view.. but i love motors.. thats the problem.. me thinks

They don't make changes to the MOT very often and when they do the changes have been announced to the trade years in advance. Most civilised countries have something similar to the MOT, test for the same things and have similar limits and tolerances.

Are you saying that an MOT inspector checking the output of a Mazda (Ford?) diesel by pushing the engine up to the red line for a couple of seconds, once per year is enough to break the engine? Sounds like a major design flaw of the Ford diesel engine. In fact you are probably on to something as nearly every Ford diesel I've ever followed has restricted my vision with a large cloud of smoke every time the driver has even thought about pressing the gas pedal, and this includes Jags too.
be careful with what you are saying.. if Vosa find out you think its due to the smoke test, they will send in the Vosa boys....code name "dieselman the axe man"....;)

Right, gloves are off now. 20 years in the trade and owned and loved far more cars than you have, as well as prolonged the life of many many more. You are spouting a load of **** and ...

ah, **** it. If the smoke test is all you have to worry about, and this is the lengths you go to then I hope you are happy in anorack's corner in the pub. Go back down there and bore them with your twaddle. Or better still, go buy a Kia and go trouble their forum with tales of your 7 year warranty.

Tiff, don't be drawn in by the fool.

He says the engine should be revved to a steady 3000rpm, but doesn't know how a diesel engine works so can't see why that is such a ludicrous suggestion for a smoke test and why the test requires the engine to be revved as hard as possible.

Chill...breath in...breath out...

Thank goodness AMG don't make diesel engines ...

Original thread?

Are we in the EU or not?

If we are, then we should fall into line with them.

If not, then we should stay with the annual MOT.

The trouble is; that the ar******s who run this country can`t make up their minds.

Pick the one you like best and send a letter to:

Vehicle Operators and services Agency
P.O Box

etc. etc.

Touched a nerve?

Little did I know that this topic would engender such interest/emotion. :dk: I posted it simply as a sort of "news" item. However the MOT test is always a "spectre at the feast" for all us older car owners so I guess I should have anticipated some strong reactions.:o

I was going to revive this thread a little but you guys beat me to it!

Recently I noticed a car which had a bulge in the front NS tyre - which is a weakness in the tyre wall. There is also a small chunk missing elsewhere on the tyre.

Anyway, I left a note under the wiper on the screen highlighting this issue and that they might want to change the tyre - and the note was still on the car 2 hours after I put it on there and then the car disappeared.

I already know from experience, as did one of my burnt out cars, what happens when you get a blow out on a bend at 40mph.

One week on - has the tyre been sorted? Hmm, judging by the small chunk missing and bulge on the sidewall, perhaps not. There are also children's blinds fitted to the car...

Perhaps MOTs EVERY year isn't a bad idea then...

I know it`s a pain, and always happens when you are in a hurry. but perhaps more roadside VOSA checks together with a 2 year MOT would be the answer.

It would sort tyres, bulbs etc and certainly catch out the guys who fiddle with their cars pre MOT day and de-fiddle them after.

Police have the powers to serve a notice to have cars checked by an MOT station, or have to go through a full test. I think roadside checking by VOSA is a step too far. I'm 100% for sticking to yearly testing though, from 1 year old too.

What is the point of a full retest if you can just take it back to a friendly MOT testing station that turns a blind eye to the faults.

I still know places that'll proivide an MOT (and road tax) without even seeing the car.... some of them even blatently advertise this fact.

Roadside VOSA checks are far better imho...

well the car has passed again.. :thumb:... first go on the smoke test...0.80... BTW
but the latest thing to come out of the mot station is an advisory on the fact that my car has a under tray, (fitted to every C220 coupe, me thinks), anyway they say they have to put down that they can not do an inspection under it...... so from now on my car will always have to have a red advisory... who cares it passed, just so long as these Mot testers cover thier ****...:wallbash:.....LOL

just thought i would put a link on the mot TEST, so the mot testers on this site (dieselman comes to mind), know that they only have to rev a diesel engine to 2500 to 3000rpm.. or do they know better that this guy..Gilders - MOT testing - YouTube
