Rare SL60, but why so cheap?

Sounds like a badly damaged SL60 that wasn't recorded and someone's bought/stolen an early SL and swapped all the bits including the chassis number.

I was thinking along the same lines, something just doesn't add up about this car.

At the end of the day if this is a halfway straight car ithen surely it's got to be worth twice his buy it now price......maybe he's just soooo rich   :D

I cant see from the photos, but didn't the SL60 engine cover have AMG stamped into the plastic cover?

Me too - otherwise I would have been at the bank tomorrow

Yes - but if someone can change a vin plate then a plastic engine cover wouldn't be much of an issue :)
There are a load of little bits that need sorting and some of them will be expensive, but most of all I need to see an R129 windscreen chassis plate so I have something to compare it with, and then see the number on the engine and see if it tallies

The plastic cover is correct for an SL60 of that era.

Let me know exactly what you want.........

I need to see a picture of the windscreen chassis plate on an unmolested car so I can compare it with the mental image I have of the one on this car.

I dont actually need to see the chassis number itself
Also - will fitting a new screen affect the screen chassis plate?

The chassis number must be stamped into the shell in at least one other place as well as the windscreen plate.
It would also be worth checking the date codes on various plastic bits around the car as well.

They're just a sticker, so more ham fisted windscreen fitters can damage them or get windscreen goo on them.

Do you want a pic of the 500 or the 60 or both?...let me know I'll do them (it) in the morning

Body chassis number is in front of the master cylinder - it ties up with the logbook, windscreen plate and VIN check for that reg plate

However the panel with the chassis number looks like it could be swapped out very easily indeed, and the lower area has clean painted perfectly rounded mastic - which looks different to mine!
hence the need to see how the windscreen plate looks

Also - the underbonnet chassis plate rivetted to the front panel is missing - but that could be due to accident damage. I am more interested in the fixed plates.

Ian - anything with a screen VIN plate - my K plate 300 doesnt have one, though the 60 would be better as its a similar age.

I did have a converation with Glojo, and the date markings on the glass might be a good reference point.

Thanks

Mark

Just seen this post - so the screen sticker could look "wrong" if its been refitted

This makes sense - but also makes me want to walk away even more

So - final question - where is the engine # on an AMG M119 V8 ?

That was another of my thoughts. Most modern parts on a car are date coded and if Mark is serious about this then we need to look into this aspect of dating this vehicle.

The very important issue is that if it is a ringer then the buyer will never legally own the car!

There is some history regarding the previous owner but is it worth considering contacting them?

They fall to bits if you try to get them off.

Sounds like the car is a bit of a dog rather than a ringer.

On the back of the block.

Are there no other body VIN markings such as in the boot and in front of the drivers seat.?

It is as per the spec sheet except

This car has cruise - the VIN spec doesnt mention it
The car doesnt have rear seats - yet the spec says it does
Now here's a thing. May Ian can confirm with his car.

I viewed an SL60 a while back, and the spec came back on that without cruise control (which it did have) and with rear seats (which it didn't).

Keep up Mr Doofus.
Cruise doesn't show on the VIN checker with these cars.
Rear seats are easy to add (but unusual to remove ones that were factory fitted)

Hmm, tricky one. The heart has definitely been in charge with mine, but that was over a decision not to sell and spend a couple of grand sorting out all the little problems instead. Good luck Mark!
