Nightmare. How new were the tyres? Must have been a serious manufacturing fault to let go at just 40 mph. Doesn't bear thinking about if she'd been doing 70 somewhere else ...

Hope your wife makes a speedy recovery.

Cheers Bill, the tyres were virtually new put Michelins on when we got it (from Costco) they covered < 1500 miles. Police accident investigation have the tyre and the report says it was a sidewall failure with no signs of impact on the outer sidewall, just waiting to get the tyre back and then decide where we go from there, thanks for the kind wishes.

wow glad she's going to be ok Ian could have been a whole lot worse. was it on local news, hope theres no lasting effects

Cheers Dave, yes it was on the local news as it closed the road for 3 hours, could have been a lot worse it's shook her up but she is a tough cookie and I'm sure she will be fine. She's currently in my CLK and hankering after a MB herself now, think its shook her confidence in 4x4 as she says she doesn't want another.

i missed it on the news but i havnt been in much of late, soon as she's physically able to drive get her back behind the wheel
I'm sure you'l look after her
edit - just realised she's already back behind the wheel, well done to her

Yep can't get her out of the CLK going to have to get her a MB of her own :D

Just read this - sorry to hear what happened - glad your wife is ok...confidence will be shaken that is to be expected but reports I read are that the big 4x4's are safest cars in the event of an accident with another car..maybe a Volvo next time??

Thanks for the heads up and I hope all is ok.

I have all sorts in my car and a life hammer will be next. Its like the fire extingusher I hope will never need but its there just in case.

Maybe we could organise a group forum buy?

How about an ML next time? I certainly feel safe in mine.

Thank goodness your wife is OK - cars can be fixed but lives are more precious. Best wishes for a full recovery

Thanks for the good advice about the life hammer - well received and we will be fitting some in all our cars.

A bit strange that a nearly new tyre failed without apparent damage at such a low speed - I'd like to see Michelin's explanation of that; I would guess that your better placed than most to pursue this........

All the best - buy your wife an extra big Easter Egg!!!

Thanks, she got a very big easter egg, flowers and champagne, I'm just so glad it all ended up with the right result. Cars are metal know matter how much we love them, people are precious and cant be replaced.

I too can't wait to hear Michelins explanation for this and my Pal who is the barrister is chomping at the bit to get going, fortunately he has seen to everything whilst I was away, again at times ike this you find out who your true friends are, between him and my 2 brother in laws she could not have been in better hands. Thanks for the kind wishes

Your wife is a brave young lady. It's truly good to hear that she has jumped back on the horse so soon. I won't wish her a "pleasant" recovery as I know first had that any recovery is never honestly pleasant as the harrowing memories and scars live on. However I sincerely wish your wife the best and most tranquil of recoveries.

Your recommendation of a life hammer will not go unheard. I pruchased one just now and will affix it to the bottom of the armrest / glovebox lid in my w202.

Will you be seeking compensation from the tyre company?

Thanks for the kind wishes HB very much appreciated. Not sure where we go next I only arrived back in the UK yesterday so just trying to pull everything together, need to get the tyre back from the Police and maybe get an independent assesment to back up the police the police accident investigators conclusion and then let my pal lose on Michelin which will not be easy but at least I wont have any legal costs :)

Well it's good to hear that things are moving. Cogs turning... And so on.

If there is anything I can do for a fellow BOTM and or SOTM let me know. I'd be more than glad to help.

Thanks HB that is so so kind and very much appreciated, this incident has actually restored my faith in human nature and goes to prove there are some really genuine nice people out there of which you are obviously one, thank you,

Oh My God... So Sorry to hear of this.

Thank you. The offer still stands if you need it. I doubt you will - but I'm a man of my word wither way. If you and the wife are ever down in London you should let me buy you all a drink or two.

Good to see you're back, was only thinking about your absence yesterday.
Best wishes to the wife, wishes for a speedy recovery. Agreed about the car its only metal and will be replaced.

Thanks for the heads up on the Life Hammer.

Simon

Miracles do happen. I'm glad your wife is safe. I had also had a very serious accident a while back and I came out with not even bruises. It just shows there is a God above.
