I have never been so indecisive over choosing a car before,
I have promised myself a C63 for years but that was before the arrival of 3 young kids under 5,
After a number of test drives and researching the sizes of estates saloons etc I have decided that the way to go is E63, I have been for a good test drive in a 2010 6.2 but have since found a 5.5 saloon in the colour of choice with all of the right options,
I know Im not buying the car for MPG as it will be a second car/weekend toy we currently run an 2004 landcruiser that struggles to return 19/20mpg around town and on the school run so as long as we achieve around the same then all is good,
The question is will there be much difference in mpg between the 6.2 and 5.5 as the 5.5 is start stop etc and mercedes show 28mpg combined!, Im trying to convince myself ill save money in fuel and to spend some more on the newer engined car,
If anyone with the 5.5 pre facelift could give me an idea of the real running costs it would be much appreciated.

Mine is a BiTurbo Performance Pack Plus car so it is rated at 557bhp and limited to 186mph.

Fuel consumption really does depend on use pattern.

Solely short (i.e. 2 - 3 mile) trips around town from cold and you'll be looking at low to mid-teens.

At legal(ish) UK motorway speeds 26 - 27mpg is relatively easily achievable on a long run if traffic is light and you're running at pretty constant speed. At 100mph+ speeds, with blasts up to 150 - 160mph in Germany last year I was astonished to still achieve 21 - 22mpg over a tank.

On general fast A- and B-road use, driving "briskly" and including the occasional full-throttle burst of acceleration (there's no point in owning a fairground ride and just looking at it :D ) I get around 23 - 24mpg.

Over the last 14,000 miles, I've averaged 24.1mpg - and that's real consumption, measured brim-to-brim (although the trip computer is reasonably accurate, over-reporting real consumption by around 3%).

In my experience, the BiTurbo is significantly more economical than the 6.2 NA engine.

Thank you for the in depth response, I think that has just sealed the deal,
24mpg isn't bad, I'm running a dmax pick up day to day and that's only doing 27mpg on average so the fuel shouldn't be a great shock,

I also have the exact same car as Phil and my average since I've bought it has been 12.5mpg

I use it as a daily and my daily driving involves town and motorway.

On the motorway it gave me 26mpg over 400 miles. I don't use the start stop as I drive in S which automatically switches eco mode off.

Amazing car try get one with the PP and LSD.

Also my last E63 was W211 6.2 and that gave me roughly the same mpg.

The one I've found has the lsd, pp, one owner and approx 34k on the clock
It ticks all of the boxes,
12.5 is scary Eco mode must work then

Pics is a must when you've bought it

Apologies to be a bit late to this thread. Just changed (last three weeks) to the W212 E63 and have driven it over the weekend 630 plus miles into France 4 up with a full boot it averaged 22.2 mpg, with the cruise set at 90-100 and a some burst up to 110/ 120 I was hoping for more as it was no better than the E55 it replaced.

With your experience Phil should I be happy or sad, did your consumption improve with mileage?

It is an immense car.

Best regards

Richard

I bought mine with 18.5k miles on the odo, so can't really say if consumption improves with mileage.

What I would say is that on our trip to Afalterbach last year we were driving like-for-like with three 55K-engined cars and my 5.5 BiTurbo car was much more economical. Maybe you were enjoying the loud pedal more than you thought? ;) :D

Cruising at 100mph will be using a fair amount of boost and the additional fuel that needs. I can't imagine that anything would be efficient at those speeds.

I get 24-25mpg for a reasonable trip of mixed motorway and urban. 16mpg running around MK with all it's roundabouts between short 70mpg sections.

Thanks Phil and Peter for your informed replies perhaps I have expected too much with all the other advances 212 v 211, let's see what pottering around on holiday produces though in truth what ever fuel consumption it produces won't stop me enjoying Sport+ !!

Regards

Richard

on a slightly more trivial note, how are you geeting on with 3 x booster seats accross the back seat? I find I have to use a narrow inflatable one in the centre and even then it's tough work to get all 3 buckled in! I have an A6 Avant on order to change to on 1st. September and hoping it's a bit easier!

Just done a 54 mile cross country not exceeding 60 mph and achieved on the on board computer 27.2 mpg

To be honest I missed out on the 5.5 and ended up with a 6.3,
Its an absolute beast of a car, probably not what I really should have brought with 3 kids and 6 points,
I find it sits in the garage all week then gets used only at weekends, Its to quick to drive slowly and all I get is earache from the misses about having the kids in the car and going to quick, she is right!
Don't think it ever did much over 15mpg
I just been offered a PX I can't refuse from Merc and will be swapping it for a new C Class estate for a daily driver and getting rid of the pick up
But I can say Ive scratched my AMG itch, still can't believe its going,
