Hi all, last week I had the mechanic tighten up the footbrake cable on my s203.

Now when i changed my rear dampers last night I noticed that my rear pads need changing, so my question is if I change the pads, will I need to loosen the footbrake cables?

(For some reason the haynes manual seem to think I have drums and shoes? What gives here?)

Thanks

You have shoes and the middle part of your disc inside is the drum for your foot brake( hand brake). Your pads on rear are separate to hand brake so just change the pads.

Discs and drums on the rear is correct. You won't need to touch the parking brake (drum), just replace the pads as per a normal set-up.

Disc part is normal footbrake.
Drum part is parking brake.
(All within the one machined disc).

If you read the Haynes manual properly it should be quite clear and it will be pretty obvious when you've removed the wheel.

I meant the parking brake (rather than the foot brake).
Anyway, I went to change the pads for the discs and it looks like i'll need discs too as the older pads have eaten into the older discs partly and the new ones are a tad longer (they go in closer to the centre), annoying!

The drum is tiny, there is just rumbling from the back (at high speeds) when I put the brakes on. although i haven't checked this with the new dampers, the discs aren't warped though. Oh well.

Pagid discs from eurocarparts are pretty good. Don't forget the MBClub30 discount code if you get the discs from them. If that code doesn't work, they sometimes suspend codes when they have a promotion on, use HOT30, which they have running at the moment.
Both codes are only valid using their reserve and collect online service.

i ask because i hear some grinding or something when I come to a stop, I was worried since I installed new dampers too, had to check them, they're ok.
can't really say where it comes from. I have a feeling the shoes are kerput!

You'll be able to check them when you renew the discs. You may need to slacken the parking brake shoe adjuster off in order to remove them. Chapter 9 - Section 13 of your Haynes manual - pictures 13.8b and 13.8c show the adjusters for the shoes.
