Santa got Junior D an iPod Touch Gen 4 for Christmas. She played with it during breakfast and left it on the kitchen table. Baby D thought he would be helpful and take it to her - it slipped out of the leather sleeve and hit the tiled floor. :(

The screen was smashed less than 30 minutes after it was unwrapped - had it happened anywhere else in the main house and it would have bounced on carpet. :wallbash:

A Google search suggests there are umpteen places who can fix it, but I'm looking for a recommendation. A postal service is OK, but I would prefer a drop-off and wait service if possible anywhere in or around Birmingham if possible.

So can you recommend a good repairer - either near Birmingham or by post?

Check to see if your house insurance covers you first.

I don't have any first hand knowledge but do know it's not a difficult job.

Just spoken to Apple. Great service but quote was £126.44!!

To be honest by the time I've paid the excess it's not really worth having a claim on file.

if you dont fancy doing it yourself or cannot find anyone local to do it ill pm you my address and if you want to send it up here ill get one ordered and repair it for you.

Once you've had it fixed, invest in one of these cases:

JumpSuit Boost iPod Touch Case | iPod Touch Rubberised Case | Gear4

It's a tight-fitting, shock-resistant second skin (other designs are available), with a lip on the screen side that protects the screen by keeping it from coming into contact with any flat surface it falls onto.

I've dropped mine several times in the year since I've had it, and despite its having landed screen-down on more than one occasion, it's still unmarked.

I use a Gear4 bumper on my iPhone 4 and it works brilliantly.

It's been tested a couple of times and I thought "Oh ******" only to fine that there was no damage.

That really is a very kind offer, thank you. I did see a few youtube clips. Who do you use for the replacement parts?

Diago from Apple, who gave me the first quote emailed me to say he quoted me incorrectly - the 32GB is £126 - and the 8GB is £84 which is more palatable. Shame he got it wrong to begin with but top marks for following up.

Been to my M-i-L's Boxing Day party and a chap there had his broken iPhone 4 screen replaced under warranty - he called into an Apple store and when the Guru asked how long he'd had it (6 months) he said he'd get it replaced FoC. Worth a try.

the screens are exactly the same the difference in price is because they just replace the ipod with a refurb 8 or 32 gig and then repair yours and use that as the next refurb,i think ive explained that right, the apple genius guys will replace free of charge if they think the damage was caused by normal use,ie pressing the touch screen too hard, but if the crack looks like it originated from dropping it they will charge you,
i get my screens from a supplier in leeds,in the three years ive been buying them ive never had a problem with them, ive even taken phones back to apple with spurious screens for warranty work and even they cannot tell.

Hi
Sorry to hear about the accident, they really are easily damaged are ipod touches and iphones.

The repair of the units is, as can be seen on the Youtube videos, fairly straightforward. I have fixed loads of them and they just require a methodical approach, a steady hand and decent eyesight helps too.

The problem with the 4th generation touch (and iphone too) is that the digitizer and the LCD screen are now bonded together. Apple decided because dust could get in between the digitizer and screen, that they would change the design on the newest models. On generations 1,2, and 3 they were separate and parts could be sourced cheaply and quickly repaired. With the 4th generation the cost of the part is the bad part. A combined bonded part complete with home button can set you back about £60. This compares with the previous generations cost of replacement of both parts at less than £20.

It is in theory possible to separate the LCD from the digitizer and just replace the glass but it is tricky apparently. If you can source a reasonably priced replacement part (check out ebay) then the actual repair is, as I earlier mentioned, straightforward.

Hope you get it all sorted. :thumb:

I said I would replace a broken screen for a mate who had all the replacement bits for his iphone, after seeing how easy it was looking at youtube videos, then found the LCD was bonded to the screen and would not come apart.
He saw the problem and decided to scrap the phone and use the SIM in a new one instead of buying an LCD/screen combo.
iphone 1, repair 0.

Hello

My brothers sister broke her iphone screen, similar thing really, LOcal phone shop in town (Chester) fixed it for £40

Also look at getting a ruggerised case for it, I've been looking at an iPad for the kids (and me) and been looking at all sorts. Gadget show had one the other day with sort of ping pong balls on each corner and they were throwing it round...

Hope you get it sorted

I think I'll call in to Apple Store one day this week. It's possible that they'll swap rather than replace it - I had to prepare Junior D for that possibility today and she didn't take it too well, because Santa had engraved it on the back:

Made in Lapland by Papa Elf and Buddy

I suspect you'll need relatively young children in the family to have a clue who Papa and Buddy are!!

I have iballz on my ipad and im not kidding you i can literally throw the thing around the room. As long as nothing directly impacts the screen it wont break.
They're great!
