So, few questions if you don't mind... As I'm now concidering an E63 touring to replace the Volvo. (aware the E and Cls are different, but similar at the same time)
Good choice :thumb:

There's a thread with a good discussion about options here, and @AlexM gave a good summary of running costs in another thread here.

1. Running costs, MPG, insurance, servicing
2. Key options to look for
3. Key issue to look for
4. Warranty? Would a Private car and Warranty direct be a silly choice? Main dealer purchase only?

Not had it long enough to answer most of these :)

Great thread. I may be stealing your w202 bootlid star idea! I have the mesh but no star :(

Can I ask what the star diameter is in MM?

I’m considering an ml63 2012 onwards with the sameness engine. How does this sound standard as I’ve heard mixed views. I have a 2008 cl63 and I’ve always loved the noise of that. I would presume it feels extremely torquey that engine.

The M157 5.5 biturbo engine (as fitted to the 2012 ML63) sounds fantastic, but it does so in a different way compared to the M156 6.2 in your current car (CL63). For a start it’s louder, much louder, especially when starting from cold, but the engine/exhaust can always be heard even when cruising.

It sounds husky compared to the M156, it vocal range is limited to the lower end of the scale - so it’s quite “bassy” - but it’s always accompanied with the whistle of the turbochargers when under load. It sounds mechanical, like you can hear every “bang” in the combustion cycle. Combined it sounds quite angry.

The M156 on the other hand has a very broad vocal range. It’s large capacity helps it to make deep powerful sound under load at lower engine speeds, but that changes to a roar through the mid range, and then positively sing thanks to it being such a high revving engine (relative to it’s capacity).

On balance, with a standard exhaust the M157 sounds more aggressive and so to some ears it will be more sporty. On the other hand, the M157 is quieter (especially in larger cars which have better noise insulation and isolation), and has a sweeter melodic sound, with a broad musical range.

The power delivery is different, with the M157 having more torque more of the time, which can make for a relaxing car to drive. Some say that the M156 lacks torque compared to the M113K and M157, and whilst I agree it’s more progressive, I don’t think that translates to a performance disadvantage (when standard).

Just arrived Carporn Fibre (real Carbon Fiber) rear diffuser: Note the lack of hole for the rear foglight as its made for US Spec cars. going to have to get my Dremmel out.

Larger 'Fins' which should add around 20Bhp :)

A serious piece of Kit Karl:cool:

Late Christmas present Karl? Looks awesome.

Just to chip in with my opinions, I’m on my second 5.5 E63 now, although this one is an S, so I’ve had over 3 years with this engine.

1. Running costs are ok, roughly 23mpg average, discs are expensive (2.5k for all 4 discs and pads, main dealer), but nothing horrendous so far. I have an MB service contract on mine which is 40 quid a month. Insurance is fine, I had a 3 litre diesel bmw before the E63 and that cost more to insure. Even rear tyres last a reasonable amount of time, but that’ll vary with how much chance you get to be enthusiastic with the loud pedal.
2. I find the driving assistance pack a very nice option, but it’s rare. Otherwise whatever floats your boat, they’re a well specced car anyway so even a basic one is not exactly basic.
3. The only problem I’ve had (and it happened on both cars) is the “AMG” sill lights failed on one side. An easy fix as it’s just remove and plug in a replacement but they’re 200 quid for the bits.

Overal, it’s by some distance the best all round car I’ve ever had, comfortable and luxurious when you want it to be, and a hooligan when you want that. ;-)

that looks sbsolutely stunning! how did you get all that inormation about the spec in the 1st post

Just type in Mercedes vin decoder on google and put your vin in ;)

A total nightmare to fit, I still havent got it right. the left hand side (in the photos) isnt sitting right but I wont give up.

I also had to Dremel out the foglight hold into the Carbon fibre, doesnt look at all great if you look up close.

Together with 1cm H&R rear spacers and the centre resonator being removed (many pops and bangs) the car is getting fairly decent IMO :D

Hope you get the fit right, it'll look great once you're happy with it.

Fyi I'd like first refusal if you ever part with it...... ;)

Stunning car!

Not my Favourite Mod you have done Karl :(

Looks great Karl, I think the back end is where you can really add aggressive mods like this.

Hi Karl,

Well done on persisting with getting it to fit, because of this is it fully reversible to get the OEM diffuser back on?

Is it stuck on or have you secured it with screws as well?

Tempted to do this as the diffuser looks better in the last pic you’ve posted than the original.

Jules
