Recommended after market brand of brake discs & pads

image.jpeg
Just had a quick look on Euro Car Parts for the price of Brembo discs for my E250 and they work out at £108 for 2.

That looks a good price, esp with free delivery

New pads are, what, £60?, plus say 2 hours indie labour at £75 (jncl VAT) totals £320?

those prices for pads and discs seem reasonable to me, especially with a few hours labour

if I can’t afford those I cant afford to run a car.

that said, a MB dealer labour rate will ratchet the cost up so use a cheaper indie to fit MB OEM parts,,,

assuming they do need replacing and the MB dealer isn’t trying it on!

I agree those prices look reasonable. Some dealer groups will discount labour based on the age of the car - I get 40% off with my SL (and 15% off stocked parts). They start with 20% off labour and 10% off parts at 3 years old.

Ok guys. Big thanks to everyone who replied and for your recommendations. It seems Brembo has won the vote
To answer two main question asked............

1. About the cost at Merc dealer. They quoted near enough £600 for the front discs/pads.

2. Do the discs really need to be changed ? Well, here's the story. The car passed it's MOT at an independent garage but they mentioned that it would be best to have the front pads renewed. So, took it to my local Merc dealer and they changed the pads for £130. Couple of months later I took it in to Merc for it's annual service. They said the front discs need renewing. Asked for a price and they quoted for discs and pads. I told them the pads had just been done and only covered a few hundred miles. The guy said they never give a price for discs only as they only change discs and pads together. When I asked why they changed the pads without the discs he didn't have an answer. So, they wanted to bin the new pads they just charged me £130 for and charge me again for another new set !!!! I was pretty pee'd off with them and decided I'd price discs from Euro or GSF, which brought me here to ask the question about the brand to go for.
Regarding if they actually need changing, I measured the wear lip on the outside edge of the disc and it's about 2-3 mm.
Your advice would be appreciated guys.

A 2-3 mm lip does indicate the discs are close to or at the point of renewal.
I know my front discs are 36mm thick new and its advised they are replaced at 33mm thick.

If I were you and want to save a little money, buy a pair of discs from ECP or similar, then get a local garage to fit them with the original pads (lightly sanded on the friction surface to remove any glaze) they will bed in fine to the new discs.

Was £600 for front disks and pads and fitting then? Does seem a touch high.

I have to say front pads including fitting for £130 seems very reasonable to me, especially for a main dealer.

If you take the wheel off (sometimes visible with it on ) on the hub is stamped the minimum thickness of the disc . Buy a cheap eBay disc measuring micrometer/vernier and you will know how long you have left .
Normally its 2 sets of pads to each disc

Thanks. Sounds like the best solution.

Cheers. I didn't know that. I'll have a look.

Ok thanks. From what you say it's time to renew. I noticed on another thread that Brembo were recommended also but the poster made the comment, "If they are genuine" which is a bit off-putting. I don't how you could tell ??

^ Buying Brembo from a UK supplier should ensure you get genuine Brembo discs.
It's the unusually cheap discs from unknown suppliers that may be counterfeit.

ECP generally have decent prices for genuine discs using their almost permanent sale discount code.

I think mine are bout the same as your wear wise, at the last MOT a few months ago there was no mention of needing discs to be replaced. my car has done 43000 miles and passed all braking tests without trouble.
When you normally change discs you do indeed change pads at the same time, but you can change pads anytime with the original discs left in place as pads always wear out first.
Sounds like you are now good for another year unless you do high mileage, once the new pads bed in they will be back up to full strength.
Some people will say change the all as soon as possible to be ultra safe, you have to decide, but its a very easy job to do yourself or any half decent mechanic, you don't need ramps just a jack and axle stands.
EURO car parts have Brembo pads for £50 at the moment so parts would be £160 plus a touch of copaslip.

Brembo, ATE and other major brands will be fine and you'll also save a small fortune for exactly the same product, performance etc etc.

I've had 4 'health reports' this year at two dealerships and each video has a different recommendation regarding my front brakes ( car wasn't in for brakes or a health report but I got it and the recommended job sheet )
The dealer(s) are ace.

£130 for front pads is cheap compared to MB official price of
  • Replace Front Pads £197.74
For discs and pads, MBs price is

  • Replace Front Discs + Pads £458.64

Just re-priced discs and pads for my E250 sport, now at £140 for Brembo.
They also price a fitting service for you at local garages nearby, I have prices as low as £80 to fit.
This my nearest garage,

The Peugeot Specialist Ltd

Peugeot Specialists, Unit 8 Liberty Way Attleborough Fields Ind Estate, Nuneaton, Warwickshire, CV116RZ

Your fitting price £112.46

I don't mind paying Mercedes £150 per hour for specialised work only they can do including diagnostics, but for basic work £50 per hour is enough.
So you can have them all done for £250, bargain.

Brembo disks and pads all round, fitted, for £250 is outrageous value.
