If you really want to get into car detailing, the anoraks live at A world for detailers... - where you will find not only basic car cleaning guides (very useful) but also many discussions of which wax makes water bead best on your bodywork.

As a quick one-off, preparation is the god of getting the car looking really good.

Wash - 2 bucket method, merino and microfibre wash mitts.
Rinse with clean water.
Clay - my personal preference is Bilt Hamber regular.
Wash again a/a.
Rinse, dry with microfibre cloths/towel.
If required, correct paintwork - that's a whole new topic in itself.
Polish - again, a whole new topic.
Wax - products from A to Z, Autoglym to Zymol. Choose your own!
Glaze - again, choose your product of choice!

It need not be too expensive - conversly, it can get horribly expensive. Up to you!
