My detailing is no different from 30 years ago - am I foolishly behind the times?

One other thing probably worth mentioning:

After I wax the car, I let it fully cure over night. I’ll also go over the car with a micro fibre and brush to get any wax residue that I may have missed when buffing the wax off.

Then, I wipe the car down with FK #425 (their detailing spray).

I’ve used a few detailing sprays and I can say that in my opinion, the 425 is hands down the best.
Unrivalled shine and slippery feel.

So, I wax the car, then wipe it down with 425.
And no, I’m not worried about the 425 removing the wax.
The 425 is not a cleaning product.
The 425 leaves the car feeling more slippery than any wax I’ve used, including the 2685 & 1000p.

Have you tried the 425?
If not, get some. Even a sample bottle.
Thank me later.

Incidentally, 425 is what I use to clean the car too, after driving it. Body, wheels and windows.
I don’t use water/ cleaners.
Once finished, I can throw a cloth up the bonnet and it’ll slide up the bonnet, up the windscreen, over the roof and down the rear window onto the boot lid.

Back in the day, my cat tried jumping on the car. She slid off and never tried again. lol

I’ve seen spiders also trying to “make the climb” up the bodywork, each foot slipping and sliding 😂

No I've not used the 425, but I follow a similar process, albeit with Sonax BSD. Again, I also use it to clean the car after a drive, or Auto Finesse Finale now and again.

Looks like something else to add to the shopping list 😂👍🏼

Just ordered some 2685 & 425, so I'll have to be on the lookout for cats to entice in to a slip and slide 😂

Just put some tuna on the roof and sit back and enjoy the fun.....apart from the claw marks of course!!

I wonder if the 425 is similar stuff to Demon pour on shine, both seem to show having polymers? 🧐

Has any one tried Mer polish, I believe it's a German brand product but could be wrong. My dad used to use it back in days, the original bottle was blue in colour.

That takes me back. I'm not sure if it was one of the 'Amway' products or whether I'm mixing that up because my Dad used to use Mer and he was involved with Amway at one point as well.
I do remember there used to be a guy selling Mer at Blackbusche Sunday market back in the 1980s who always had a red mini bonnet on display with one half polished and the other covered in scuffs.

That Mini bonnet was still doing the rounds in the early 2000s at events like Ford Fair and Autosport International etc, it's no wonder it was so shiny! 😂.

I did used to use Mer on our family drag car back in the day, until we secured a deal with Meguiars. It was actually pretty effective at the time, but it never seemed to last long. A bit like Auto Glym SRP.

I'm literally the only person on my street (and probably development!) who washes my own car. I always have done too, with every car I own, and I actually consider it to be quite therapeutic.

I'm no master detailer, just a hobbyist, but I know my way around a DA polisher etc, and enjoy things like getting the wheels off and cleaning the arches or pulling the sill covers off and cleaning all the crap out! There's something very rewarding about standing back and admiring your own handwork...usually for it to then rain 😂🤦🏼‍♂️

Product-wise there's loads of snake oil and buzzwords out there (like the slightest drop of si02 content being branded  ceramic in giant letters), and I've probably tried most of them. I always tend to go back to old faithfuls though; Bilt Hamber snow foam and wheel cleaner, Auto Finesse citrus APC, FinishKare 1000P wax and Sonax BSD etc. I don't think there's any right or wrong product or process though as long as you're personally happy with the result.
Like you, I use the Bilt Hamber snowfoam and the AF Citrus APC (as a prewash on tough spots like squashed bugs) both really good - I’m now a convert (last 2 years) to the Turtle Wax Ceramic Hybrid shampoo and the spray coating. Both fantastic products. The spray is very easy to use (if applied sparingly as recommended on the bottle) and the protection lasts really well.

Over the years, I’ve been through dozens of different products (the photo I posted earlier in this thread was a tiny selection of stuff I have tried).

However, I think that there is also a lot of hype. I used Carlack for a while (yellow bottle on counter) about 5 years ago and it also gave fantastic results (see below).BE11DB3A-5A9E-43DB-9B43-04D2313EF560.jpeg

I have tried the Turtle Wax Hybrid shampoo and spray wax. Although I was happy with the results, I don't like that the shampoo is practically "sud-less". I know it's a minor thing, but it seems to dry quickly on the panel and I found it hard to tell where I'd been. Following their instructions of cleaning a panel and then rinsing it straight away makes it a bit of a faff for me, overcomplicating what should be a simple wash.

My car is off the road at the moment thanks to some DVLA-related nonsense, but I've got my FinishKare pink wax and quick detailer armed and ready to use once she's back in action! Hopefully within the next week or so.

Would be interesting to hear your thoughts on the FK2685 when you've had a chance to give it a go.

I always wash my car a section ( tops, sides, lower sides (below doorline and under, last) at a time and rinse so it works for me. Lack of suds yep agree (because of the SiO2 content) but it works.

I’v made a promise to myself to use up everything that I have now, before buying anything new (I’m always giving away partly used bottles of stuff and it is not cheap).

Unless by some chance I'm forced to wash it in direct sunlight, I'm definitely a "full wash then rinse" person!

I know what you mean on that one, I've got shelves full of part used products 🙈.

I doubt many people who are buoy cleaning their car to very high standard to it to impress others.
Yep i also wash the car myself, takes 4 hours all in, but don’t do it to impress others, I do it for myself, to ensure it remains as swirl free, and scratch free as possible, and to make sure the paint work doesn’t get dull.

In my mid 50s now, so yes it is becoming a touch harder, but still worth it once done, and as others have said, I also find it very therapeutic.

Ideally would like to wash it every two weeks, but with a full time job, sometimes it can be once a month.

well, whilst i do envy the younger their extra energy and flexibility along with the extra years they have to come, the thought of another 20 years working …. mmmm, no thanks.

I just took early retirement this May age 56 and I've been working on various cars we've bought since (my company car had to go back of course). I do all my own servicing and detailing, but I've had the occasional back spasm after crawling around under the car(s)...I'd still rather that than go back to work though. :)

63 here too.
Really fortunate enough to have retired early this January having run my own company for the past 20 years. Oh man, the freedom😃
