Has your rear view mirror got red/green L.E.D.'s in it?
Have you tried to operate it pointing at the rear view mirror as IIRC that is the antenna/reciever for the locking, not the door handle.

Probably means the IR sensor in the door lock is non functional or it could be the convenience module under the rear seat. Does the drivers door lock LED light green or red during lock/ unlock? As far as I know the leds/sensors on the W124 are confined to the driver door and boot .

Can confirm W124 has sensors on drivers door and boot. No sensor in the mirror - that came later

no sensor on the mirror. no light green or red on the door handle, this old system 1996 w124 i never seen one with mirror light it is usually on w129 and other models.
but the door one is dead the tailgate still works, i am unsure if it can be fixed on the door handle and how if any body got any ideas.
convenience module must be functional if it works on the tailgate or can be working for one location and the other not working.
