The front seats must be right back and set to the lowest position, using a blunt flat blade tool prise the side panel out starting from the rear, the panel is held by spring clips going into the center console, the front section slides in and out into slots. Remove the three screws marked with a red arrow along the sides of the console,, 1 screw each end and one in the center, the screws are 3cm long and recessed. Do not take out the 4 x 2cm screws.

Remove the ash tray

Prise up the gear shift surround plate from the bottom with a blunt tool and lift it over the gear knob. Undo the lock nut at the bottom of the knob ½ turn anti clockwise and the knob lifts off, including keyless go and remove the gaitor.

Prise out the top of trim over the comand and pull upwards and backwards from 2 in the picture, and it will lift out.

Refitting is in the reverse order

This is very helpful; thanks.

But how is this process different in a post 2004 R230 SL (with DVD Nav)? In the new trim I want to fit to my 2005 SL350, there are two 'lips' at the top edge of the trim (the heater control end) which fit behind the bottom edge of the COMAND unit. How do I take the trim out without snapping these off? Do I need to take the COMAND unit out?

Thanks in advance,

Kourosh
