I've seen a car for sale with a vandal scratch running down both sides and across the boot and bonnet . Seems to be mostly down to the undercoat and I can feel a ridge so I'm wondering how much this would cost on average to repair or would a full respray be required? It's a 2001 silver 7 series BMW.I'm wondering if insurance covers this sort of thing ??

Insurance would normally cover this BUT should ur inusurance company find out it was present prior to the inital purcah ethen it would not be covered and considered a fradulant claim (which it would be..).

I'm not saying anything and it is possible to beat the system...

Yes, what I mean is the seller fixes it on his insurance or knocks off the repair costs from the price otherwise I would not be interested.Anyone know what's involved in such a repair ?

thanx

I would ask for money of respray from a decent approved BMW bodyshop to be carried out by yourself with the cost being knocked off the asking price by the seller. Trouble is that u dont want the seller to use a cheap backstreet bodyshop to carryout botched up repairs. Alternatively, ask the seller to go down the inusrance route and see what reaction u get and if goign down the seller's insurance route then do reserach on the bodyshop that is used to enusre that it is reputable and comes with warranty etc.

Unfortunately that damage sounds quite expensive. I have generally found if you run your fingernail over the scratch and you can feel the 'groove'.... You have a problem!

I would be interested to hear if anyone has a GOOD, cheap option. Usually you should go to a good body shop that has a reputation. Cheap does not usually equate to 'good'.

I wish you luck,
John

Looking at £1k to repaint the car to manufacturers standard privately.

Here is the cheap option, not sure if it equates to good, but have heard good things about this sort of repair. http://www.chipsaway.co.uk/repair/chipsaway.asp
(there are other similar companies).

I'd view it as a inexpensive (probably £50-100) professional touch up of a scratch
Vs expensive (high quality if done properly) full body spray

You can always exercise the full body spray later ;-)

BTW, if you take detailed photos of the scratches, some operators can give you an email guide on the cost BEFORE you buy the car.

ive just had a quote from a shop to do a tvr with a nasty keying down one side - 220 quid. theyv'e just done my car (90% job to be honest) - for 750 quid, not factory, but a million times better than it was.

so a grand would get you a v good job...

this isnt suitable for big scratches such as a keyed car, the only option is a respray, I would say a grand is a fair estimate.

It all depends on the Chipsaway franchisee for the quality of the work. Factors such as the colour of the paintwork and location on the actual car have to be taken into consideration. Silver is one of worse colors for touch up by operators such as i.e. Chipsaway.

Its a BMW so why bother painting it anyway :D , some low life is just going to come along and scratch it again.

(offence not intended :p )
