Yep, used that technique last time round to drive a Toyota dealer down to where we wanted him. It puts an E220 SE auto estate somewhere in the 28s.

We were paying cash that time. Finance is a little more complicated given the extra party with an interest in the deal. The MB illustration shows a 'Retailer deposit contribution' of nearly £4,000. Is this really from the dealer, or is this the thrown MB money that Gizze mentions?

What, in other words, are the factors I should be looking to massage to achieve the best possible result?
 
But then so are Audi, I was just offered £6000 off a new A6 S-Line Avant this morning, and that was before even asking for anything.

That is an offer that is available from all of them.

Audi UK are throwing £4000 at new A6's and then the dealer will discount as well.
In fact, as soon as I said the A6 just wasn't for me the discount got bigger.

Also, they have dropped the price of the s-line pack from £4000 to £1500 as well, £1500 for full leather, xenons, nicer styling and the nicer wheels seems a pretty good deal.

The bi-turbo looks nice, but it is still a £55,00 car with some basic options ticked, and you know that will loose £35,000 over the first 3 years, Audis always do.
I guess if you get £8,000 off that may soften the blow a bit, but I just couldn't spend that on an Audi.
I bought my last one, a 3.2fsi Quattro Avant at 3 years old and 30k miles and paid £13k! for it, that was a £48,000 car. It had everything on it, they just loose so much money.

I gave up on the A6 anyway was I couldn't work anything out on the website, no proper specs, no prices, no info on what gearbox can be put with what engine etc. etc. Frustrating!!

Had a brief chat with a salesman and I seemed to know more than he did despite the fact that my source was the web site.

Your depreciation comments stack up pretty well with the Fleetnews car running costs guide.

Thing is I want a fast, comfortable, capacious long distance car with 4wd (winter time spent in snowy southern Germany) so not too many options.

Nothing wrong with the GL but fancy a change.
 
If you need AWD they do make sense.

I would definitely wait for one to come up on the AUC site though, bet it will be about £40k and at that point it starts to make more sense.

Well, it seems you can if you can find one. I spoke to one dealer and heard that they've all gone, mostly to fleets, even there was supposed to be stock to last till the end of Q2. Finance sweeteners - and starting prices - on AG models are much less appealing - he suggested £3,500 off £37,000 for an E220 AG, which I can't see working for us. Perhaps I should ask an Audi dealer the same question, although I've yet to drive an A6 and (from back-seat experience in airport taxis) I'm afraid it will ride like an, um, Audi.

Incidentally, please excuse any belated or missing thanks for the useful answers I've had here. I read and write mostly through the smartphone app, and if that has a Thank facility, I haven't found it yet.
 
There are definitely some E220 Exec SE saloons and estates around, I was offered a choice of three today. maybe not exactly the colour and trim you want but if you are a bit flexible then it should be possible to land a deal still.

First year around 30%, year 2 around 10% and year 3 around 5%. However, own one from year three to 7 and it can be very costly again.

How is year 3 to 7 costly - do you mean just depreciation or factoring in repairs and other running costs?

I know from buying our new Juke with 0% APR that it worked out cheaper than buying a 1 year old one but I would have thought by years 3 to 7, you've shaved a large chunk of depreciation off?
 
I find that from years 3-7 they loose a lot again, no more than they loose from years 1-3 but it does make me wonder if it is a wise move?

I lost more buying a 3.5 year old E320cdi and selling it 2 years later than I have buying any car at a year old.

Plus I had more expensive services etc.
