SAP Bluetooth Cradle 12-digit problem

I've got a pre facelift W203 C-Class (2003). I've just bought the V1 SAP Bluetooth phone unit - the one with the handset. When using it with a sim card installed to the handset - it works okay with the Audio 10 CD unit. Incoming calls are fine, but I can only make outgoing calls to numbers programmed to the sim card as there is no numberpad facility on either the handset or the Audio 10 unit. I can live with that I suppose. BUT, I would rather operate the handset using bluetooth to connect to one of my mobile phones. I have a Nokia 6230 and 6230i (both of which are listed on the compatibility list. I also have an HTC TYTN smart phone ... which isn't on the list, but I see from the forums that it should also work.

Here's the problem. During the bluetooth pairing process, the instrument cluster on my W203 reports a 16-digit pairing code. Well, at least it is supposed to. It actually only shows 12 digits as it only has a 12-digit display. It's the same with the Audio 20 CD unit - but it apparently has a 'clear' button, which allows you to see the last four digits.

Has anyone ever got around this problem. Any suggestions?

It is mentioned in the manual.

Note
Since the operating system can only display 12 digits, the CLEAR soft key must be used to delete the rear digits and show the front digits.

Hope that helps.

Roger - thanks. But which key is the "$ soft key" ... which button do I press?

I cannot find the guide for an Audio 10 on my BT SAP device manual but since the unit has I believe not more than 14 buttons, why not try one after the other.

If the pairing does not work with an Audio 10 after all, would it be possible to pair the phone and the BT device on another car and then bring the BT device to this car that only has an Audio 10 unit?

Sorry, the dollar sign came about from cutting and pasting from Adobe. It is the CLEAR soft key.

Just a word about the Tytn, the research I did showed that it did not work with the SAP cradle, thought it was supposed to do so. There was an addon you could buy called jetware which was supposed to make a difference. I just bought the cheaper HFP model instead for mine.

Diesel Benz - you are a genious. My business partner has a post face lift W203 with a higher grade audio unit (don't know which one). I am hoping that he has more digits in his console. I could try that. But thanks for the tip

Mind you, if anyone can figure out how I can read those extra 4 digits (yes Diesel I will try all of the buttons one by one) then I would be grateful

It does say the "soft CLEAR key" Does that not help?

I believe the soft key appears only on an Audio 20 and if I remember right, this HU was an Audio 10 which probably does not have any soft key.

The code will change so even if you can get it on one car the same code wont necessarily work when you put the cradle back into the other car!

Not sure how you are going to do it if its an Audio 10 unit at all! AFAIK its possible with Comand and Audio 20 only.

P.S Don't ask Autoleads as they will say the units are the same;)

Alfie - I'm going to install the bluetooth cradle to my mates car, pair it with my telephone and then take both units out and install them (hopefully already paired) to my car.

I think it is right to say that the SAP bluetooth handset isn't actually wholly compatible with the Audio 10 ... but it's working without bluetooth at the moment ... and hopefully the above step will get that going too.

Only drawback is that I can't actually phone anyone unless they are programmed into my sim - but I can live with that. I can pull over and use another handset for that if I have to.

Good plan - but bad news - once paired, the SAP will ask for a PIN number (the SIM pin number) - Maybee you can turn that off by telling the phone it doesnt need a pin ... and being a V1 it has to have the PIN every time. V2 remembers it (almost always ..)

Other plans:
a) Upgrade Audio 10 to COMAND - talk to alfie -
b) Or Install voice recognition (but is a pain dialing - so a bad plan without COMAND
c) Have you done the phonebook download (you'll have to dial 0000 <call> - which probably means putting it in the sim or doing it in your mates car !) - then you should get the rest of the phonebook - but, being a V1 its not that good at phonebook downloads.

Microsoft windows mobile 6 SAP implementation does not communicate with SAP V1 or SAP V2 - so Tytn won't work with SAP

Can't use HFP cradle on a old type COMAND car - lots of bad echo for the other party.

Cheers

I have the V1 BT SAP device and I have turned PIN code request off from my phone. No need to enter the PIN code then when starting the car.

The HU update might be a good idea but I find it an interesting attempt to make the most out of an Audio 10. The phone book downloads automatically in my car (even if I wouldn't want it to), if this works with the Audio 10, then one would be able to call these numbers at least.

Aha, thats good - I run with pin request on on all my phones, as they are all contract phones and i'd rather limit the potential damage if lost :-)

I'm interested to see it work with Audio-10 - technically I believe it will as (a) its exactly the same phone control module and (b) the Audio-10 does support the phone function - and it is it acting as the relay between the D2B fibre optic interface (and thus the phone system) and the CANbus (and thus the instrument cluster) - as mercuryl is finding, its probably just a useability issue !!

I have seen quotes from people who have installed Jetware on the Tytn and got SAP working. Not tried it myself, but if you get that far and are desperate it might be worth looking at. - Having said that i'm having second thoughts about that - it might be the HFP people got working.

Sorry!

I've been reading up on this jetware thing, and as far as I can see it is adding OBEX Push bluetooth profile, thus giving access to memory phonebook, call lists and some other stuff. SAP cradle will use this when you do the 0000 thing to download it (i.e drops out of SAP profile to do this other stuff), HFP cradle just tries it automatically as it can be done in HFP mode.
Jetware themselves say "The JETware Hands-free Extension provides additional functionality to the built-in Windows Mobile support for the Bluetooth Hands-Free Profile."

Others seem to have problems getting the SAP pairing to work at all - if that happens then I guess the extra features of the OBEX stuff are academic !

But if you do get it to pair, and want address book download, it seems that Jetware is helpful

Sadly I dont have a Tytn to try out !! Let us know how you get on ...

SAP Bluetooth solution?

I have tried (unsuccessfully) downloading the jetware bluetooth extension to a Palm Treo 750v that I bought hoping that it would pair with the V2 SAP bluetooth cradle I have in my facelifted C230.

The cradle recognises the palm treo, but I am unable to get it to pair. I am still using my Nokia 6300 which pairs perfectly, downloads phonebook et al.

For mercuryl, another option would be to upgrade the Audio 10 unit - Ebay seem to have plenty (Audio 20/COMAND) for sale, but not necessarily a cheap option.

Most new Nokias come with the bluetooth version2, which seems to resolve pairing issues with the V2 SAP cradles.

Not sure if this is much help.....

Regards,

Richard
