Filled up at Shell today and was given a leaflet advertising their new "fill up and go" system - basically you use your mobile phone to scan a barcode thingy on the pump and pay for your fuel via paypal over your phone rather than having to walk inside a shop and talk to a cashier when paying.

All very good but haven't we all been told for years we'll explode in a ball of flames if we use our mobile phone at a petrol station?!? Now they are basically suggesting we do - whilst the leaflet says make sure you keep your phone in the car a) most people don't read the leaflet properly b) most people will forget and c) how do you scan the bar code on the pump from inside your car?!?

What a great idea....

Even if we were allowed to use our phones at the petrol stations, what are the chances that it's going to be quicker paying via your phone rather than going to the cashier.
What if there's no data reception at the station...

Hi All,
Re is it safe

The idea is to use the phone in the car not on the forecourt

Fill Up & Go FAQs | Shell

Is it safe to use a mobile phone on a forecourt?
It is safe to use a mobile phone from inside your car on a forecourt, but not outside the vehicle. Once you’ve activated the pump, please leave your phone in the car.

It states quite clearly in the info that phones are permitted within the car.

"It is safe to use a mobile phone from inside your car on a forecourt, but not outside the vehicle. Once you’ve activated the pump, please leave your phone in the car."

Also, the main reason for banning mobile phones is simply because they are not designed intrinsically safe and so by law cannot be used in such areas

"Mobile phones are not designed and certified for use in explosive atmospheres which exist temporarily around the pump and nozzle during refuelling as well as around the fill and vent pipes during petrol deliveries.Such use is expressly forbidden by law under the conditions of the petroleum licence and associated guidance. Whilst the risk of incendive sparking from mobile phones is low, they are not intrinsically safe devices and should not be used in those hazardous areas that exist on a forecourt. Generally, there is no need to restrict the use of mobile telephones in other areas of the forecourt, such as in the shop, in motor vehicles parked on the forecourt or in other non-hazardous areas."

The other reason is distraction...

The big issue with this atm is the option isn't available in the Shell Motorist app. Bit of an oversight perhaps??

EDIT ---- As if by magic the app has just updated to include the option...

I know they say it's safe and to keep your phone inside the car etc - see my original post - the problems are listed a) to c). Your average idiot (not referring to anyone in particular but have to admit that from time to time I fall into this category!) will drive onto the forecourt - see the nice little advert next to the pump, won't bother reading the small print and get out with his/her phone to scan the bar code!

As others have said it won't really save time and you can pay with a card at the pump at many petrol stations now anyway - I just think it's a dumb idea that is asking for people to use their phone on the forecourt next to the pumps when they're re-fuelling. Staff will love it too - they'll be on the tannoy constantly telling people their phone back in the car!

I wonder how long it will take to realise that no payment has been made at all?

According to the info the driver selects the amount (limit) to pay and this is deducted (via PayPal) immediately. The pump then initialises and one can fill up. The pump automatically shuts off at the limit selected. If the delivery is terminated before the limit is reached PayPal will refund the difference within 3-4 days.

Pumps won't dispense until initialised, either by the ap or the staff

Apart from the mobile devices issue ....

Is this actually solving a problem that actually exists?

I find it hard to recall when I last had to pay a cashier rather than pay at the pump in the last 5 years. Maybe do it once every 6 months if that?

Whilst I understand that you quoting bona fide statements, the the reality is laughable. Since when was a motor car EX rated?

What happened to the idea of direct debits linked to reg numbers using anpr cameras in stations?

I prefer the tesco pay at pump facility, quick and simple.

BTW mythbusters busted the fuel vapour mobile phone ignition myth. Still would not try it myself.

Hmmm
I always select to pay the cashier as I need VAT receipts.
Whenever I've selected pay at pump the printde receipt mechamism has always run out of paper.

This caper sounds more hassle than just walking into the shop and paying at the desk.

Always makes me laugh at French fuel stations, there's usually a bloke having a coffee and a smoke outside the shop.

Instead of wasting money on these half baked ideas why don't Shell reduce the price of V-Power fuels so we can buy a bit more

Looks like it can email you a receipt,

"Step 3 – Fill up & Go

You can now fill up with fuel, just like you would do normally.

Leaving your phone safely in the car, start filling up. Make sure you use the pump you have just activated.
Fill up with the fuel you need. Before you reach your maximum fuel spend limit the pump will stop dispensing automatically.
Once you’ve finished, simply return to your car. The app will confirm the purchase and you can continue your journey.
We’ll also email a receipt to you for your records."

Don't know if its a VAT receipt though.

Looks like if you have Shell fuel card you can automated the VAT side of things.

Hope this helps
