Just wondered how much you guys paid for Shell Helix? I've always been a Mobil1 guy but today whilst in my local main dealer I spotted a litre bottle on the counter so I enquired, £16! Anyway, I got into a conversation about it with the parts guy who then went on to tell me about the special offer they were doing on it.

£25 + VAT for 5 litres! Needless to say I bought the ten litres I needed for the SL and left quick smart before he changed his mind!

Anyone else seen this offer?

Mobil1 is slightly cheaper than that at Costco but not a bad price for a main dealer. Offer will be a dealer thing as they dont all use Shell, my local dealer sells Mobil1,

Shell Helix by a country mile.

Had it before in my E320cdi and the engine was smoother and quieter.

Ask Flanaia1, as he can prove and give proper examples as to why its superior to Mobil 1.

I had the CLK services last week and it was Shell Helix used (MB229.5 spec) and when comparing the price to the previous year the oil was half the price per litre!!!

MB Dealer charged me £15+VAT per Litre for Shell Helix Ultra during A Service (back in 2009 - I am now with Olly).

So I was not happy when they charged for the full capacity - 5.5L for my 1.8 engine, but only put 3.5L in because they fill them up only to the Min level (well, the Min level is still within MB spec! Greedy or what...).

Shell petrol stations sell 1L for an RRP for 14.99 inc VAT. The reason I know this is because on the way back from the MB dealer I stopped and bought some oil to top-up the level up to a couple of notches below the full mark when hot (which is where should be).

(BTW, they quoted £260 for an A-Service - and then billed me £320, though when I protested they quickly replaced it with a £260 bill saying an 'error' had occurred)

Obviously all my subsequent complaints to MB were ignored. So following the MB dealer spectacular rip-off , I turned to Olly, and never looked back.

A tip for MB UK: sometimes you can be your own worst enemy...

Rant over :)

Did an 'A' service on my clk 320 last night for around £40
Genuine MB filter - around a tenner
Castrol magnatec £25 for 8 litres from costco (think that is PLUS vat)
another litre from some oil I already had

Job done in around 20 minutes - including a good wipe around inside the filter housing.
Let the oil drain for about 1/2 hr (used a Pela estractor) while I did some weeding.

service indicator reset from steerind wheel/dash button - 10,000 miles to next service.

inserts smug smiley :)

Some dealers/garages don't fill to the max as sometimes when on a long run and the oil is very hot it can trigger the "reduce engine oil" on the cluster.

But only filling to the min and charging for the full compliment of oil is out of order.

Indeed, and when I pointed this out to the so-called 'service advisor', he claimed that when the level is at the Min the capacity is 5.4L, so they only overcharged me by a very tiny amount... cheeky b----r. It's a full 2L, or £60+VAT in MB money, between the Min and the Max.

To clarify... I am not stingy, I was happy to pay £260 (which is on the high side even for MB dealer), I just don't take it very well when someone looks me in the eye while helping himself to my wallet.....

One man's lie is another man's "legitimate business practice" ! There was a time MB dealers left a "complementary" top up litre in the boot after an oil change! :(

And screen-wash.... from another post, apparently some still do, but sadly these days it seem to be the odd one out rather than the norm.

I wondered if Castrol was to MB specs then found this very useful sheet

Well worth bookmarking

The first time I ever took a car for a service was my first c230k, back in 2001 at Whitefield in Manchester. They left a bottle of screenwash AND about 3/4 of a bottle of oil (shell helix) in the boot.
