SLK 55
Was wondering if anyone could help.
As a new owner of an SLK55 I am after more noise from the exhaust. It seems the cheapest and easiest route to go is to remove the middle resonator.....
Has anyone got any experience of this? And perhaps more importantly who can i trust to do a GOOD job with a decent grade steel and decent weld?

I am based in SW London, and the closer the better!

thanks in advance:)

Speak with Eldin or Simon and Topgear/EMP in St Albans

Thanks for the reply mate.

Take it these guys come highly recommended?

From what i hear the resonator is replaceable for re-sale purposes (should it be too obvious from the noise that its been modified). Anyone got anything negative to say about this mod?

Cheers for the reply...just wanted to ensure a decent quality job/material/weld, read many a story of shoddy welding! Also that it is reversible!

And dont want to have to travel miles for it!

Cheers guys
As far as you guys are concerned any of the three mentioned, Top Gear and longlife and the one in Bath- all are of an equal match quality wise?
So just go to the nearest?

all the best

james

Top gear did mine.... Most people that look under the car don't even realise its not standard!!

Quality will be on par in terms of materials and build, it them comes down to service and how will they deal with any problems.

IMO ... for a straightforward welding/fabrication job (replacing a muffler with some stainless steel tubing) it doesn't really matter where you go.

I had no problems at all with Longlife - the centre muffler delete on my SL cost just £129 (T304 stainless steel) although that was six years ago, and they did it while I waited (about 90 mins.). I'd happily use them again.

Cheers for your help guys. Going to try and get it done this week.
Like you say a simple job- so cant forsee any problems.. cant wait

Excited for a bit more grunt from the beast!

.. Another vote for Eldin at EMP - really high quality custom work, he's done two of my cars and both were spot on for looks and sound.

I had the ressinator and secondary cats removed in my opinion just the ressinator would not be loud enough. On the motorway cruising it sounds no different but give it some and wow it sounds ace especially with the roof down.

Thanks for all the help guys.
Final question- I rang Eldin at EMP, just to clarify- do I need to get an x-pipe (more expensive option)so that it is balanced or are straight pipes equally as good.

Just want to double check which is needed on a SLK55??

cheers guys

I would just remove resonator and fit straight pipes. If you want to splash out fit Eisenmann!

Emp/topgear in St. Albans, can't go wrong.

Not if only removing the resonator as the secondary cats are already linked via a H pipe, this acts in a similar manner to an X pipe. Leaving the secondary cats in but replacing the resonator will yield a noise gain but will this be enough? Last week I removed the secondary cats and replaced them with an X pipe, but also removed the resonator and replaced with straight pipes.... It sounds great.

Correct!

It should be loud enough, don't forget N/A 55 is a lot louder.

Why? Sound is already balanced further up the exhaust.:thumb:

Not on mine the ressinator was the balance.
