Vito 111CDI
Hi All,

I have just brought a Vito 111 CDI and today noticed there is a limiter set at 75 mph. How easy is it to get this removed and what price would i be looking at?

Many Thanks

If it's the limiter that's part of the cruise control, it'll cost nothing to remove it :)

Press the end of the cruise control stalk inwards and that'll disable it.

Welcome aboard too :thumb:

Depending on spec. you can often set a speed limit via the cluster menus - intended for use when you have snow tyres (with a lower speed rating) fitted. It will be covered in the handbook, if you have one. I bet someone has just done that.

The limiter activated via the CC stalk (if you have cruise control) is cleared when you turn the engine off.

i think for just 75mph you can reset it using the cruise control stalk
have a look in your handbook

What kind of limiter is fitted? Is it just the Vito's own speed limiter as the above posts, or is it the type of limiter fitted to most commercial vehicles, especially HGV/LGV? If it's the latter type, is it electronic or mechanical?

Modern HGV/LGV and vans are limited electronically and set via a computer, similar to the Mercedes Star machine. It only takes a few minutes to enable (any speed) or disable, but I don't know what sort of cost is involved.

Here's a link to the type of limiter I'm talking about. UK Speed limiter information

I doubt any commercial vehicle limiter would be set to 75 mph (above te speed limit)?

Just covering all options to try and help OP. Mercs can be confusing for new owners, especially without Handbooks and a lot depends on the previous owner. 75 may have been a company policy. :dk:

That depends on the nature of the limiter. The ones on our works vehicles are GPS based and very accurate, more so than the speedo which reads about 73mph when it kicks in.

Some countries has a law that vehicles >3500kg must have 'internal' speed limiter which cannot be adjusted by consumer (but via star yes). But Vito should nor exceed that weight limit? And is that kind of law in UK?

Yes, vehicles 3500kg gross weight and over are limited to 56mph in UK. It's a European Council Directive.

Coaches have gone past me at considerably more than 56mph, so obviously no limiters on them, or is the law not enforced!

I notice the OP hasn't logged in since posting his question a couple of days ago - hopefully he will come back to look at the responses!

Good question, I got hit by one of these at 70mph...
If he had been limited there wouldn't have been an incident in this case and my car wouldn't have been written off!

I think coaches are allowed to do 70 on motorways, as a sweetener for them being banned from the outside lane.

Oops, corrected that. (omitted Goods from previous entry).

Buses & Coaches up to 12 metres in length.

According to the UK speed limits, buses & coaches not exceeding 12 metres in length can go as follows:

Built up areas - 30mph
Single carriageways - 50mph
Dual carriageways - 60mph
Motorways - 70mph

Buses & Coaches Over 12 metres in length.

Unless speed limits dictate otherwise:

Single carriageway - 40mph.
Dual carriageway - 50mph.
Motorway - 60mph.

I can confirm that 1980s Merc 2044 Powerliners were limited to 72mph, but removing the interior light fuse disabled it, not that im admitting to doing it you understand

My 60 plate 113CDI also has a speed limiter at 77mph (124kph) on the speedo, all our Vitos and Sprinters have it. Quite a lot of company vans have speed limiters set in the ECU from new :(

BTW anyone know of a way round it without Star? :)

As a coach driver coaches are limited to 100k ie 62mph if that helps
