Spotted showroon condition W126

I'd so love the reclining rear seat in the 560SEL. If i could find one i'd retrofit it to my SE, legroom or not.
The trouble with those would be the economy. The figures i saw suggested even on a run, not enough mpg for me to be able to entertain it. My 420 does 30mpg on a long run, or thereabouts, and is used for Reading to South Devon trips every four weeks because of that. And it pulls like a train too.
The 560 wouldnt be any use to me. I'd LOVE to try one though! (Somebody please let me have a go?)

They are all unbelievably cheap though. This does happen with all the S classes doesnt it? I used to buy W116's, they were ten a penny, £100, £300 maybe for a nice car. They've gone up now and will only go up more.
My current 420 was the princely sum of £405, MOT'd, taxed etc. Such a bargain, and its been faultlessly reliable. Cleaned up great but did look pretty sorry for itself at first.
I saw a 560 with the individual reclining rear seats, lpg converted etc, about £600 i think last year. If i could have i would have snapped it up but it needed work.

In theory they can only go up, there was a load of them up on ebay in the last couple of years, a lot of them would have been broken up for the cash revenue of the parts, which should make them harder to find. I
t'll take ages though, if it happens at all -with the demise of the combustion engine envisagable, who's to say it will happen at all. Things are set to change arent they.

yes: change for the worse though :(
According to US sites, 19 mpg on a run for the 560 SEL! That makes it a dream car certainly. Love the shape of the W126 though..

Later V8's will definitly go up in price as so many cheap ones are being bought by breakers as they know they can get £300+ for the 8 pin ignition module.

So cool. I saw one recently that had smoke screen and oil slick functions, or so the advert said. And the fridge in the boot. Very James Bond. Never heard of those things before apart from the fridge. The car in this link has the flagpole attachments too, they cost a fortune even on ebay.
I wonder how they drive with the extra weight of the armour.

My 500 has the reclining rear seat , I'd like to get the individual reclining rear seats too , trying to get a pair in mushroom leather is the trick - I have seen a few in other finishes . Also the rear door curtains would be nice to get - I already got the electric rear window blind from a breakers car - I keep trawling round breakers yards for bits my cars don't have , but my cars are by now more 'optioned up' than most . I tend to strip optional extras from donor cars and retrofit them to mine as long as I can do it in such a way that it looks like it was there from new - just bought the SLS rear struts that were for sale on here the other night , now to get the rest of the system .

I haven't driven a 560 myself , but from speaking to others who have , I understand they're more about top end performance and are geared lower for better acceleration , hence heavier fuel consumption - there have also been comments that the 560 engine is not as tractible at the bottom end of the rev range due to lower torque there .

The consensus usually is that the 500 is the best all rounder with good performance from low revs , fuel consumption only slightly more than the 420 - I routinely get 18-20 in a mix of town/country driving and have easily achieved 25 on long motorway runs at the legal limit using cruise , without particularly trying to drive economically . I'm due to fit a new exhaust soon so that may improve economy .

A 560 would make a good donor car as they had so many things as standard that were expensive options on lesser models .

Derek, if you find your individual recliners, maybe i could buy your reclining bench from you? I love the extras too. I have the rear window curtain (but not the sides) fitted, and the electric blind too.
And yes i've heard the same about the 500 being supposedly the best all rounder.

i have one of these, SE 380,1981. It was the diplomatic car for the Cyprus Embassy for 17 years. Does anyone know if this adds more value to the car?

Not really is the honest answer, condition and specification are more important. Unless it has some unusual features (flag holder etc) and anything else history wise e.g. newspaper clippings etc featuring the car.
