W211 E Class SBC Pump

I checked with my inde after the last post suggested you could get them from Bosch and they can be sourced quite easily now without MB's quite spectacular mark-up.

Does anybody know for sure if STAR can be used to tell how close an SBC unit is to it's 300k cycles limit?

Yes, STAR can tell how many cycles pump has done. No, trigger limit is not constant, many other parameters are monitored and trigger can be anything between 250k-700k cycle (what I've been reading)

Thank you for that; an answer at last. That leads on to another question, though; can STAR give an indication of how far through its life the pump is - quarter, half, three-quarters, or a percentage, say? And can any old indie with a STAR extract the data, or does it need a really skilful operator to do it?

Developer mode is needed, its not available at all official garages. And it's all german language. No, trigger %-level is of the pump cycles is not seen, like said program calculates trigger and other values constantly (under certain conditions lifetime is shortened more than others), and AFAIK they are not seen (tough there are many parameters, which I cannot interpreter :dk:). Also pump unit may give fault other reasons than only pump cycle counter, and then reset of the cycle counter does not help.

Xentry in developer mode will tell you everything. I had my counter check and it was at 270.000. I ask kindly my indy to reset all counters to 0. You don't have to wait until message brake visit workshop will light up in your dash.

Thank you for that, guys. I don't want the counter reset; I'd just like some indication of how far away I am from having to have the SBC pump replaced. The SBC unit in my '03 car has an '08 Bosch manufacture code, so from the MoT mileages it has done at absolute most about 90K miles, and maybe much less, but it would be nice to know for sure what the counter reading is now.

I got the same brake bust workshop message about a week agoooo, I pressed one of the buttons on the steering wheel and it disappeared, hasn't come back on since but bracing myself for it to show up again in red this time..! What's the chances of dealers contributing towards the cost of a new SBC unit.?

Zero chance Ash. Rumour had it that you could get the pump directly from Bosch for around £600 but that turned out to be false.
If the warning does appear in red, prepare to be bent over for a four figure sum.

In saying that, sometimes it's possible to reset the pump with Star if a certain code is present (PO249?), but should that fail, then it's a new pump.

I think Olly at PCS has reset one at least IIRC.

Thanx AMGeed..... So the real issue is when it shows up in red.? First Mercedes-Benz so far I've been really impressed just on para about SBC... Ticking time bomb..

Yes the SBC and airmatic struts are both potentially an expensive repair. But go into the ownership of a W211 knowing this, putting a bit of cash aside for eventual repair makes it easier to bear.
I knew about the SBC pitfall before buying my E55. Didn't put me off in the slightest.

Got a full MB service history and less than 10 years old?

Hi,

Mainly dealer history except last couple, and is a 2005 model very nearly 10 years old..
But just I was out driving today this "brake wear" message came up and has been on since. Is this the dreaded SBC warning or is this just a waring for pads?
I have attached a picture but not sure if it will show as still trying to get the hang of this posting business..!

Any help would be appreciated.

Pheeeeewww...!! Thanx guydewdney.
Anyone know a good indi locally to High Wycombe I can take it to for pads? , I have tried the "independent Mercedes Specialist" near Risborough who was charging more than the dealers for a reverse sensor repair. So if there are any others that anyone can recommend would be appreciated. Thank you.

As above. Your pads are worn out.
Start to sweat when you see the warning in red:D
+1 for Terry and Wayne Gates. Heard nothing but good about his business.
