A few of us discussed this at the GTG, what would the interest be in a Club purchase of the proper MB spring compressor tool? I think there are a few of us thinking of changing springs and pads that we could get some use from a set. I have no idea how much these cost, anybody know or able to find out?

I am thinking we could buy a set and we either chip into to purchase them or better still if we 'rent' them out to members as they need them. The rent would have to also cover postage. Not sure if it is feasible or possible but lets see what interest their is.

You know I'm interested.

Dorian . . where are you ? Please advise what you use, and what they cost !!

Or if they will definetly work with MB springs, I have a set of Snap-on compressors sold to me as suitable for MB springs but they will not work.

I'm interested... perhaps we could have either a group buy or someone could buy a set and work out some kind of hire facility for regular members or something. Bit Picey though, from recollection around £400 in the UK.

I've got a set of springs that need fitting, why can't I use this sort of compressor @ £23.50?

from what I've been told about these springs from very respected mechanics is that unless you have the Klann tool it's a job you shouldn't even consider. If you do have the klann tool it's a job you should think very carefully before taking on - those front springs are lethal!

Spring Compressor

I have to endorse what Andy says. Once I managed to get the fr springs off a 190 with non-MB compressor and tying them with rope ! I set the springs on the floor only for the rope to come loose off one of them. It was not exactly fun dodging a spring bouncing round the garage. I then called in my MB techician friend who changed the 2 springs in under 10 minutes using the proper MB compressor.

if you ever come across a guy called Stu Ritter (he wrote the W124 owners Bible) ask him to tell you the story about MB front springs and their dangers. I forget the details but it involves a spring breaking loose like your did and embedding itself in breezeblock a wall some 20 yards away!!!!

They can be very nasty, but when i lowered my 190 i used a trolley jack under the wishbone, to compress the spring and once the stub axle was disconnected i slowly let it down, worked a treat...

My last Do-It-Yourself job for a friend was changing Front Springs on a Vauxhall, never again and I had the right spring compressor which we hired. Those springs were bl**dy hard work, not helped by my friend being bl**dy useless..

try a peugeot 306..never again, never ever!

I just changed the rear springs on a Sierra without the use of any special tools apart from a big bar. Why are MB's so difficult???

Anyway, got a contact who works for or supplies Klaan tools so I shall try and see what his very best deal would be on the above tool.

Yes, i could be in on this depending on cost. A bit of a drop would set my car off nicely.

Yeah, I'd be interested in chipping in, although I wouldn't really want to do the spring change myself, nor do I have the facilities to do so.
