Spring Compressor - Club Buy?

"Steve" can borrow the MB tool and do them if anyone is interested.

I've used the proper MB tool, as in the "Sir tool" pics and it works a treat. I'ts effectively just a threaded bar passing through two solid plates.

The reason why the aftermarket ones shown are bending is because they are cheap and c@*p. Decent ones wont bend but the wishbone and spring cup get in the way when using them.

The reason why the springs still have tension in them is due to the damper restricting wishbone travel.

Do as Ricky did and unbolt the damper and lower the wishbone, the springs will just about drop out then, and there is no danger as the spring isn't compressed at all.
If really necessary undo the bottom ball joint and possibly the anti roll bar to gain even more travel.
You could probably use aftermarket spring compressors to assist with this as you would only be locking the spring in a partially loaded state and wouldn't be compressing them any further, so wouldn't foul the wishbone.

I'ts worth buying a trolley jack for this operation alone.

You only need a spring compressor if the suspension is still fully built and if the car is fitted with Macphereson strut type suspension, as they are removed as a unit then dismantled.

Don't use a a rope in the spring method, I've done it sucessfully but wouldn't advise it.

Still working on it, getting a bit closer to getting one sorted.

Dieselman, i do find that i have to split the ball joint in order to lower them enough...

And I've never done a 202, but 210's 129's 124's 140's and 201's can all definately be done with usual 'hook-type' compressors, i payed £60 or so from snap-on and they have been amazin! Apart from i never use them to drop the springs out, only to re-fit...

On Macphereson struts, a lot of the new mercs, have a removeable top plate (whatever the technical term is) basically so you can unbolt the unit, complete shock and spring, then compress it on a bench compressor or do it in a vice...

Those klann ones look VERY VERY simple in comparison, but for the money...WHY?

Ricky

Still being quoted silly prices, it would be cheaper to buy a set from the US if somebody is willing to ship them.

How about ebay#2495595394
Do they look cheap and nasty??

/QUOTE]

The top plate is the swivel bearing and comes off with the strut and is then undone.
I've changed a spring on a Fiat with Macphereson strut in under 15 minutes using clamps.

I have got a firm price of £230 including shipping from the US, have we got enough people wanting to donate/hire them at £30-£40 a go? I need at least 3 other people to come in with me, otherwise it is too expensive for me to buy on my own to use once.

I'm in as long as you demo the use of them on my car fitting a set of H&Rs and #1 spring pads :D

I ordered the spring compressor tool on Monday from USA, it has just arrived, it looks just the kiddy. I will try it on mine tonight or tomorrow and report back how I get on.

Graham, get those springs ordered then!

The instructions say it is suitable for most cars, it lists 124, 202, 210 etc as well as most other makes.

114 / 115 / 107 ?

126 / 140

No mention of any other MB's but dont see why not. Kit has 2 sets of different sized 'cups' for different diameter springs, one for 70-130mm another for 90-150mm diameter.

Will do ASAP!

I am happy to buy a share of the compressors still if you wish.

The spring compressor certainly does what it says on the box. I just had enough time after work to remove the Remus exhaust and refit the standard one (after painting it with VHT paint) then I set to on the front springs. My aim was to replace the rubber spring pad at the top of the front coil springs with a No:#1 pad, I currently have No:#4 pads and the car sits just a little high at the front.

The spring compressor is very good to use, I was able to compress and remove the front spring without removing anything other than the wheels. The thinner pads have done exactly what I wanted, the car now sits level within a few mm,

So form an orderly queue if you want to RENT the compressors.

Jimmy,

I went to AMD who are 5 minutes from me on Saturday. They are able to supply Eibach and H&R springs. They have my details are are due to call me with an exact price for the H&R's and a supply time on Monday.

They know they can't fit them as they don't thave the compressor, but said they could do an alignment check afterwards, cost about £90.

I am thinking of H&R Sport Springs which I think lower about 40mm and #1 Springs Pads. I might buy some #2 pads too for the front just in case that is too low.

Once I have all the parts, try and stop me!
