I think the AMG wheel looks best. Can't say I'm a fan of the 'all wood' look. Me likes the part leather, part wood ones, but not sure that would be appropriate for your car Jay. Just 2p's worth.

Thanks for all the help...

Well i managed to get it off... I figured that the only way to beat a bodged up job is with more bodging... so i got a square sump drain hole socket and hammered it into the rounded head... then got the biggest lever youve ever seen and with all of my 12 stone under the bar, i managed to get it off... i was scared of breaking the column too as it just didnt want to shift.

The funny thing is that my W123 wheel came off a bit easier and that hadnt been undone ever! The green marks were unbroken on it..

all is well, i have put the AMG one on for the time being (with my new bolt!) and first impressions are its nicer to grip and looks/feels more original.

When i first bought the car, the first thing i said to the seller was that the cheapo wood steering wheel would have to go! It grew on me, but in the end i decided that i always hate bits that look non original..

The other thing is that the horn on the wood wheel fell to bits on removal so i can see some super glue'd fingers coming soon...

I will be keeping an eye out for a correct period half wood wheel though..

Cheers for all the help..

Well done that man - have a narna :bannana:

Looking forward to seeing the pics to see how it looks.

Well done, looking forward to seeing the pictures of it fiited too.

Glad you got the bolt of in the end, its a pig of a job when it rounds!

I drilled one out on a W123, not a pleasant job.

Just for future reference, the best way to remove the steering bolt is to use a long lever bar and give it a quick crack. If you undo it slowly it WILL round. The bolt has loctite on the thread to hold it in place hence the difficulty in removing.

Just make sure you use a decent allen key and give it a tap with a hammer to make sure its seated before you crack it open.

Here you go!

Have to say it looks a lot better than I thought it would so hat's off to you!

Thanks! yes well to be honest, it was designed for this very car so it should look right!

Im off to seal me alloys now as ive had to get them out in these salty roads!

That's better Jay, it looks great. As you said it was designed for the 560.

That looks much better than the wood one. Absolutely suits the car.

Now - a question, is your car a Jap import? It has the climate control system from a non Euro Car......we didn't get those buttons that you have above the radio, we got the wheel on the left, two round dials then a wheel on the right to provide temperate control for both driver and passenger. I haven't got my camera otherwise I'll take a picture.

USA cars also had that kind of set up.
I've never seen a UK or European mainland car with it unless it's an option I wasn't aware of.

Very nice Jay and it does look to be correct and part of the car and not a stuck on accessory

Looks absolutely amazing Jay, well done for getting the other wheel off. Now everyone can see that you made the right choice and ditched the wood wheel :bannana:

MUCH better, I'm surprised how good that looks, totally in place

Good effort :)
