Stuck in Park - Gear Selector Module

My friend has just purchased CL55 AMG, 51 plate with full MB main dealer history, 84000 miles.

Invited today to drool over car and to his embarrassment found new pride and joy stuck in P !!! No warning lights showing and vehicles started with no problem.

With gentle 'fiddling' managed to release from P but when re engaged stuck immediately - again, gentle fiddling/movement, eventually released.

Mobilolife attended and declared 'Gear Selector Module' will need replacing. All fault codes were cleared at this time

Has anyone any observations regarding this problem i.e. is it a common problem with this gearbox/mileage, will it require complete new unit or is repair possible - any information will be greatly appreciated prior to visit to garage

Vehicle booked into Approved MB Workshop (Vikings of Canterbury Kent) on Tuesday for their assessment/repair

The brake light switch that normally causes this does not apply to the SL and CL the DAS ignition switch is one reason, it could be a selector module we may have one other car with that problem in the Alfie Conn thread but not sure at this point of time

Thankyou for your very swift response.

I will revert back result from garage when vehicle is examined - as a slight aside, I could find no indication in Service Book of gearbox fuild being changed.

Whilst I appreciate that 'Gear Box Module' problem is unlikely to be associated with gearbox fluid, is it recommended this fluid is changed at any given mileage/time for this model? Might as well complete all jobs whilst with garage.

Bill

M-B went from saying that the gearboxes were "sealed for life" to recommending fluid changes at - IIRC - 60k miles.

Hi Bill,

Probably stating the obvious, but if he can avoid it , don't let your mate just say to the dealership ' Just fix it ' ...

Try and tell the guys on here first what the problem (exactly according to MB ) is ...

Not saying the garage will stitch you up , but you never know ...

Best wishes

At the time of your posting, jay had posted on this fault.

Re the fluid do change it at every 40k - 60k miles along with the filter

Thankyou for the sound advice

I am able to go with him and Vikings of Canterbury have sourced/serviced my last four cars. I find them very good with service levels/advice and as a bonus to this situation, they are quoting -25% labour charge promotion untill 1st April !! Not all bad news, I hope

gear selector

not too sure if your selector is the same, but my 2001 s class did the same thing in december, i was the first car off, stuck in the middle of the ferry door on the ireland ferry and it wouldnt engage drive, i held the whole disembarking up for two hours:D :D

it finally went in drive and i drove to the hotel in dublin. the following morning i stripped out the selector and inside there is a black plastic crank lever that is pushed down by the solenoid, the end of the lever had broke off and jammed up the selector, i shook it and it fell out and never had trouble since, on the return trip i had to prove i had repaired the selector before they would let me board:eek:

Update from visit to Garage

New Gearbox Module required and now ordered - gearbox oil/filter to be changed on advice of this forum - split found on inside tyre wall and failed MOT - without crawling under car would not have been seen, especially given low profile of tyre - new tyre fitted - they say things happen in 'threes' and so it has !!!

However, owner absolutely delighted with this and it joins his 08 Range Rover, 06 Lexus - I can only drool !!

Many thanks to all

Bill
