E55 AMG
Hi,

Changed the pads on my 2001 E55 AMG a couple of days ago, using genuine merc pads... to discover an awful bounce on the pedal. This wasn't as bad on the old pads as I guess they'd bedded over time with the discs.

Really need to change the discs now. The prices for discs are painful to look at! Even from eurocarparts I'm looking at about £170 EACH! I haven't checked the dealer - I'm too scared to call!

Please please please, can anyone recommend a decent set of discs and a price that won't break the bank. Brand and where to buy from would be much appreciated.

AMG disks = AMG prices, I'm afraid. You're unlikely to find them much cheaper than ECP and if you did, I'd be questioning the quality. You really don't want to be taking chances with brakes.

You might be in for a pleasant surprise. W210/208/202 AMG discs have always been £200+ each from MB but just recently there has been a price reduction. There was an official MB dealer selling these discs for £149 a pair and others have found main dealers doing them even cheaper (under £100 IIRC!)

Have you checked your wheel bearings?

I was one those lucky enough to get a set of front discs for £149 delivered, when others posted that £149 might not of been such a good deal as they were getting them between £50-60ea.
I went into my local MB dealer, and enquired regarding a set of pads, and it seems that the pads are circa £67 a set (instead of £120), and discs were retailing about £60-65ea. (instead of £249.60ea.) I made a comment to the parts guy about MB reducing the price and that must be a first, really? he stated he then clicked on the screen to where it showned him how much they as the dealer was buying them in at, the pads they were making just over £1 profit, the discs they were actually making a loss as they were buying them in at over £100ea.
I think there has been an admin error somewhere in the system regarding these prices, and it will be a error dealer wide as the system is common to all dealers.
To the O/P when did you get a price for the discs? if it was,nt recently get to your dealer quick, as you might get that them at the £50-60ea. price, and do keep quite on how much you have been quoted in the past, you might be lucky.

Thanks to all for your suggestions. I took Will's advice and called the main dealer today: £54+VAT each. You can imagine my joy as I placed the order. May consider buying the rear discs and keeping them in storage until required if the prices are likely to rocket back up in the near future.
Thanks all, this info is seriously useful to all owners I would imagine, should be a headline article somewhere on the site!

Result, pleased your getting them at that price.
When you pick them up and you have paid for them with reciept and new discs passed to you, mention to them how much you had been quoted before, and that in your experience dealer parts prices don,t ever go down and then ask them to check how much they bought them in at, and watch their faces drop lol.

:-) I don't think I'll rock the boat especially as I'm planning on stock piling the rear discs and pads for when I get through them!
