Tell me about owning a Range Rover..

That is the very reason why I/we don't get on with BMWs…the reverse Tardis effect. Thanks for the heads-up.

If bootspace is on your list, the Discovery has 1,124 litres, it is massive in the back.

If you get one, try to break the mould and keep out of lane 3, whether tailgating with that intimidating front end or holding up performance cars :thumb:.

Big isn't necessarily clever...

Friend just bought a Cayenne, he loves it, sporty drive...apparently much better than his previous RR in terms of build quality and reliability...I think he had a few transmission / electronic gremlins with his RR.

If interested do a search on GL as I seem to recall a few issues on them...

Get one bought. I'm on my third RR, just love them.

The only thing I would say about Range Rovers is for a big 4x4 they are not that big inside.

You can't see anything in front of Range Rovers on the motorway, and it's difficult to tell if they are lane hogging or actually have traffic in front of them. :wallbash:

Also Range Rover drivers need to take note that with DRL's on they don't have any rear lights showing, so don't be surprised if you get drivers behind flashing you in the dark!

The only thing I know about RR's is it costs a fortune to fill the tank .

I've driven lots of Series LR's and Defenders and really respect them - only downsides are cramped driving position and Titanic like turning circle .

Have you looked at the VW Touareg ?

I drove many series threes and owned a Defender for nine years. I can live with driving position because I actually found it okay but can't do without an auto (for my wife) and some degree of refinement.

Someone else mentioned the Touareg and I have looked; it os on the 'consider' list but I am very much leaning towards the S/C RR and be damned with the fuel costs.

My Range Rover 4.2SC. There's nothing like it. A brilliant car in every way.

The performance is great and the comfort is unsurpassed, especially if you have a duff back.

The design and layout of the interior is flawless.

Kardon Harman Ice Logic sound system with speakers littered all over the place and 3 sub-woofers as standard. Brilliant sound.

Go treat yourself, Kevin. :thumb:

Many thanks for the pictures; your RR looks sublime. And thank you for your PM.

Spoilsport. :p

Another 'out there' contender might be the VW Amarok ?

It is a pickup truck , but I'm assuming you must be able to get a 'Truckman Top' type thingy for the back end ?

It can be had with 4WD and an 8 speed auto , VW market it as having real off road capability .

Maybe worth a look ? It is BIG though .

I sense you're looking to buy but there are some great lease deals on Touareg: £4800 deposit and then £252 per month (including VAT), for the sooper-dooper spec 262PS R-line model. That's only 5000 miles per annum but can be increased by negotiation.

Volkswagen Touareg Diesel Estate 3.0 V6 TDI BlueMotion Tech 262 R Line 5dr Tip Auto

I saw that advert only a few minutes ago and although a good deal, I have beed completely debt free for some time now and would really like that to continue. I also like to buy my cars….depreciation and residuals be damned.:o

I built one of them online and selected pretty much every option plus lots of extras. This was a complete waste of time because my wife said she didn't want anyone to think she was a Traveller. I tried to point out that this was not a Mitsubishi or Toyota etc but she wouldn't have it. Nice thinking though, Pontoneer :thumb:

Something a bit more rare:

GMC Yukon XL SLT RHD | eBay

I quite like that. However, I discounted an early Range Rover (now called the Classic) because I need reliability. Until my second garage is built, I would have nowhere to keep an older car and then I would have to build a third garage for my new bestest car….I do not have an estate big enough (or at all, actually) for a third garage by any means.

I like the thinking though.

Pity - a quick browse of the website showed there is indeed a factory hardtop .

Range Rover Sport is without a doubt the most abysmal car for reliability (had two) both been the same!

They break a lot. Electrical/air suspension problems :(

It's the reliability that scares me off from any LR product, Discos and RRs always seem to have something wrong with them, some joint that needs replacing something that should have been greased.............

We just purchased a 2011 RR sport HSE with just under 50k miles about 2 and a half weeks ago. If im honestly speaking, its not even all that. Its a pile of heap tbh bearing in mind the price of the car. The only thing nice about it is that you feel really high up and can literally drive over anything which gets in the way. Oh and the best part is looking down at all the small hatchbacks which look like ants. The functions and features are all exactly the same as my mums c class which costs less than half than the range. Only thing extra it has is a TV, fridge and DAB, rest is all the same. Seats have alot of adjustment inside it and are comfy but again, Merc does EXACTLY the same as it. We have done 2k miles in just 2 weeks and even today we just did a 500 mile trip, it was relaxing, i am tall so i have long legs which in the merc even in the front seat get cramped but in the range no problems. Initially we was really worried about the fuel economy which was a put off at around 28-30 MPG but the 3.0 diesel engine which is not even bad, it squeezes about 40ish MPG with a light foot on the accelerator and grips the road tight. Also someone mentioned it costs a fortune to fill the tank, its £70 ish is a full tank which gives 400+ miles on the OBC which is really accurate as we calculated today. Good car but costs too much for what it is. So far, reliability wise we cannot comment but its got full LR service history and only maintaince they have done is brakes and some electrical minor warranty work. Like the guy above said, theres a few niggles, some joints do need greasing as you can always hear something making ugly rubbery sounds when you turn into a round. But these are small stuff, another thing i like is that it sounds like an absolute beast coming, you can hear it from one side of the road.
