Following on from my Complete M271 and M272 engine threads here is “The complete M276” thread.

The Mercedes-Benz M276 engine is a direct injected, V6 gasoline automotive piston engine. has a displacement of 3.5 liters (3499 cc) with a bore of 92.9 mm and stroke of 86 mm. Output is 302 hp (225 kW) at 6500 rpm with 273 ft·lbf (370 N·m) of torque at 3500-5250 rpm.

The M276 engine is related to the Chrysler Pentastar V6 engine, with which it shares its basic architecture, as it was developed while Chrysler was still owned by Daimler AG. This can be seen in its 60 degree vee-angle, as opposed to the 90 degree angle of its M272 predecessor. The 60 degree vee-angle eliminates the need for a balance shaft, improving refinement while reducing mechanical complexity.

The M276 engine features an aluminum engine block and dual overhead camshafts with independent variable valve timing on intake and exhaust valves and a new timing chain arrangement. The M276 also includes direct injection with piezo-electrically controlled injectors for more precise fuel delivery, multi-spark ignition that allows for multiple ignition events during the combustion stroke, and modified accessories (such as the fuel pump, water pump, oil pump, and alternator) that reduce parasitic loads. These features are also shared with Mercedes' M278 V8 engine, announced at the same time.

Mercedes-Benz claim that the new engine, in conjunction with vehicle modifications such as a stop-start system, can produce up to a 24% improvement in fuel economy while increasing power and torque over the M272.

The Mercedes-Benz M 276 is a series of six-cylinder - V-engines ( gasoline engines ), the Mercedes-Benz since the fall of 2010 as a successor of the M-272 produced generation. Compared to its predecessor is the cylinder bank angle of 90 ° is reduced to 60 °, so that even without balance shaft no free inertial forces of the first order occur. The bore is 92.9 mm, the stroke 86 mm. The compression ratio amounts to 12.2:. 1
The engines are far more fuel-efficient than the previous types. There comes a gasoline direct injection of the third generation with lean operation, as well as a multi-firing are used.
The engine generation is closely related to the eight-cylinder M 278 , even though they have 90 ° cylinder bank angle. The new V8 is already since the end of 2010 CL-Class and S-Class used. The six-cylinder debuted in spring 2011 in the facelifted C-Class and the new SLK and CLS and all 4MATIC models.

Technology

For technology package of the new generation of engines include, among others, some new developments. The advanced third-generation direct with spray-guided combustion and piezo injectors leads, in conjunction with a multi-firing to reduced fuel consumption - the V8 by a further developed homogeneous combustion process in the V6 by a new stratified combustion process with extended performance range including optimum fuel efficiency, lean burn. The power consumption of ancillary units has been reduced. These include an optimized water pump with second generation thermal management, a regulated oil pump, a volume-controlled high-pressure fuel pump and an intelligent generator regulation. By means of consistent lightweight design and an intense fine optimization also the engine friction has been significantly reduced compared to the previous engine. Together with the start-stop technology , shift point adjustment and the frictional loss overall improvements in driving consumption of more than 20 percent were possible.

“The latest generation normally aspirated, direct injected, 3.5 liter M276 V6 engine, with a maximum of 306 HP and 370Nm (272 lb-ft) of torque, is a powerful and smooth mid range engine. This engine is available in the 2012+ C, CLS, E, and ML. Our R&D department has spent an enormous amount of time perfecting the ECU software for this engine. An increase in power of up to 330 HP and 400 Nm (296 lb-ft), as well as improved throttle response and raised speed limiter, is now available. As a unique KLEEMANN feature, we have managed to improve the software in the 300 models (which is, in fact, the same engine as the 350, but intentionally limited in power production by the factory) so the new power level becomes the same level as the 350, plus tuning gains. 300 owners will gain what is a normally unheard of improvement in power and torque from an ECU tuning.

Engine 278:
1) Up to engine number 278 9xx 30 073273 install check valves and chain tensioners
2) From engine number 278 9xx 30 073274 up to engine number 278 9xx 30 103675 (February 2013) install check

Note:
When performing repairs and only the check valves are supposed to be installed, the tensioners must still be checked
according to WIS documentation. If optimized tensioner is found to be defective it must be replaced

How will I ever get MB North America to fix my valves and tensioners? Yes, I have a definite noise on start up.

Following on from my Complete M271 and M272 engine threads here is “The complete M276” thread.

Ive been looking everywhere for the press in tool W276 589 00 33 00. It's needed to push the check valves in flush.

A question for those more knowledgeable than me about these things - the 3.5l version has more HP and more torque than the older M272, but max torque is at 3500rpm as opposed to 2400rpm in the 272. So, for most normal situations, wouldn't the 272 be more usable in terms of power, even though the overall figures are lower?

Excellent stuff @R2D2.

Here is a link to later developments of the M276 in the 400 E Class and CLS. There are 2 versions, DELA30 (3.0) and DELA35 (3.5), both producing an identical 333 bhp. Later model E400 Coupes switched from the 3 litre to the 3.5 litre but exactly why is unclear. I'm pretty sure the *43 models are a further development of the M276 too. The M276 in its 333hp mode is still very tuneable.

Assuming equal displacement, it doesn't mean the newer eng has less tq at 2400 compared to the old, it no doubt has the same or more at 2400 but simply carries it further and peaks somewhere higher. Higher is always better imo since it shows the eng can breathe better and thus make more power period. For example the Chevy eng I hotrodded makes peak tq at 2200 (per the factory), but now peaks at ~5k+. Not sure what it's doing now at 2200 but it certainly makes more tq period and over a substantially broader range. I doesn't have adj cam timing either, well, not nearly as good as the M276, and that adj timing has a huge effect on how wide a tq curve is. Said tq curve is no doubt placed in an ideal zone for driveability, but possibly bumped up a bit to give good HP #'s to boost sales. The general public likes to see the biggest #'s. So basically I'm saying, without proof, that I doubt it's worse at 2400, and is better above 2400.

You may not need said tool, it may simply be a matter of making it flush? I'd have to see the part and where it goes but unless the tool is <$2 I'd just redneck it. I have very few, and I mean almost no special tools and I do all kinds of stuff. Sure it's nice to have the right one, but when it's $, you'll never use it again, and can easily done some other way I choose the other way.
My eng is said to need the new tensioners and check valves, but I have yet to see if the dealer has done it. If not I may be in there myself and if I do I'll post pix etc so know what to expect.
I am curious as to why the tensioner needs to be replaced if it's simply a matter of the oil bleeding out? Do you or anyone know?

Just looked up to check - the "43" AMG twin turbo engines in the c43 and e43 are both M276 derivatives.

Hello,

Has anybody here actually replaced the balance shaft on the 272 with the 7 speed transmission and did this rectify matters or are these engines hopeless if it's a 2005 with the bad vin?

More specifically, does anybody have experience with the 2005 cls 350?

Thank you
