The numbers don't add up, do they?

And a C220 isn't...

While model/engine number " speak " may be annoying to many people may I present the other side of the coin..
On quite a frequent basis we get "guess the model" posts on the forum. "My C class ????????? engine is making a squeaking/rumbling/loud/strange/ noise when its cold /hot / starting / after being parked up for 4 years! -----should I change the oil?
I would merely suggest that just like a tourist visiting a new country you are likely to get more out of your visit by learning a bit of the local lingua franca:dk:
Oh, I didn't know that Mercedes were French!

Before I joined the forum, I wasn't interested in Mercedes models, not to mention code names. Sometimes people from different brands refer to their car by models and it creates confusion. When I heard E63, I thougt we're talking about Mercedes E63, when in fact it was BMW ;-) Have no idea about model code names from BMW but some people use them and I just give the nod suggesting I know which model they talk about.

Depending on who you ask, mine is either a W203 or a CL203...

It's both.

All vehicles are W but C denotes coupe (or CL in your case - don't know if the L means anything albeit "Lightweight" in the world of BMW).

So my car is a W216 and a C216.

As in... " My C class W203 estate only does 17 mpg around town and lucky to get 24 mpg on a run"

"Blimey, that can't be right. You had better get that looked at by a good Indi, preferably one who has STAR."

"What for ? Its a C55 AMG, if I boot it I can get that down to 10 mpg ! :p"

So my CLS, which is a coupe, could be a W218 or a C218? That means my car is a WC!!! Come on, I know that Merc quality has gone down in recent years, but is my car really a toilet?

:p

I'm new to the Merc seen and these numbers really confused me when i started reading, i'm assuming mines a W176? (A45 AMG)

It's not that complicated... assuming you own just one Merc at a time, all you need remember is one model designation... yours. I.e. just remember 'W176' and you're good to go!

It's just the first 3 numbers of the VIN isn't it? So mine is WDB203756....... etc.
