This thing called Command is stupid

I cannot keep up with the discussion, a few notes still:
- the German price for all the different DVDs appears to be 257 euros:
https://www.shop.mercedes-benz.com/pkwcollection/category.htm?category=adKZwHSWTarLJuICjVIK1d-142

- Navteq provides the maps for the W221 navi. If you look at the Navteq web shop, you can buy the map DVD for the W221 for US but not for Europe (have to select the region properly to get the info).
That's what I said much earlier on in this thread. Malcolm has a TeleAtlas based CD system, whereas SOME newer Mercedes has the Navteq system which in my very personal opinion is slightly better than the more modern TeleAtlas versions but with Navteq we are tied to buying our disc's from Mercedes, BUT they are no dearer than any other suppliers of DVD based navigation disks.

Simply following directions isn't a problem, it's when you need to revise the route etc. that problems can occur. I'm sure the manual says you mustn't do this when on the move, but human nature being what it is ...

A TomTom or equivalent is still a distraction, but at least it's up on the screen in the driver's eyeline (which of course is why it's not an elegant installation like COMAND!). Data input also seems quicker and easier with the touch screen, although I use the wireless remote for mine
remote300500.gif

which is mounted in a holder on the dash, right next to the steering wheel. The remote is very simple and can be used with one finger without looking at it at all.

Or you could have Linguatronic and just tell COMAND the new destination :D

Have you ever tried to tell the car where to go with linguratronic, you will end up telling her where to go, and she does not know rude names

Come on, Malcolm, admit it, you'd marry her if you could  :D ;)

Yes and you can do the same with Garmin. Miles more cheaply of course.

And it has a lovely add on for holidays. Insert the language memory card for France, say, and you can say a phrase in English and it will translate and say it back in French. Useful. Or type it in.

'tis true there is no justification for choosing COMAND over the portables :(

Except...;)

It's sooo much cooler, it's class, it's Mercedes! :bannana:

Linguatronic on the newer MOST based cars is an awful lot better than that on the D2B based ones. I've used mine a few times to navigate and it understands names a lot better than i thought it would.

This post has NOT impressed me one jot   :D (joke)

I think that I will go for elocution lessons, my voice is not unlike the one in the link above

this is why i have gone for a alpine w200ri double din system in my dash and have a tom tom system which as said several times is very good.
The alpine system i think looks a lot better than the command system from mercedes. Oh and its cheaper and has a much bigger screen

Does it intergrate with your telephone? Show call details? Does it allow for navigation details to be shown on the instrument display?

I'll bet not. Plus i'll bet it doesnt work with the steering wheel controls either!

Alfie the fact that my comand has no highlighted TMC any where in the displays mean that the unit must be replaced I presume

It has one on going fault in the service menu B270B and I cant find what that is

Depends on the unit, some company's do make adapters for aftermarket headunits that will integrate nicely with MB's implementation of CAN.

Not seen any that show the info on the Combi yet but they have steering wheel control so its just going to be a matter of time.

All that being said I'm still a COMAND fan and have it installed in my cars, just the look of the unit alone places it ahead of aftermarket units as far as I'm concerned.

Aftermarkets always look aftermarket, whereas the COMAND looks just right.
