All of a sudden my car seems to need much longer "turning over" before ignition - despite the light indicating the plugs heaters being out. I am beginning to wonder whether it will fail me and not start. Been happening for 2 days, regardless if hot or cold.

Anyone any ideas?

The car is a 2002 E270 CDI, 32000miles, and 4500 to next service (indidated as a D+, whatever that means)

Hi Marc,

I reported the same issue to the dealer at my last service. They said they found a slight fuel leak from one of the hoses so the pressure was releasing when the car was parked. The changed the hose and it was fine - until recently! Now it seems to be taking a few seconds again.

How long does it take to start? a couple of seconds or longer?

A couple of seconds. Whereas previously it was basically instant, now you have to wait for what seesm like an eternity but really is only a couple of seconds - its just that you get used to it being instant.

Imagine firing up on say 2-3 "revolutions", now seems to be 6-7 - if that makes sense

That's similar to how mine is now too, like yours it used to be instant. Its still better than before they fixed the fuel leak.

Mine's due for a service in 1000 miles, guess I'll mention it again.

Hi
ASk the dealer to carry out injector leak off test

This will get worse and eventually will just not start. Mine, although a 320cdi, was recovered twice last year because of this and they kept telling me they had either found a faulty injector or leaking hose. It broke down again and it turned out to be the high pressure fuel pump at the front of the block was causing the fault.
The garage kept telling me that it starts within the alloted time but you know when your own car takes longer to turn over, seems like ages but is probably only a couple of seconds.
Not sure if its the same pump on the 270cdi but they had a general recall on the e320 cdi's because of this problem, probably because mine kept breaking down and I was getting fed up because they kept telling me if it starts within 5 secs then it's within tolerances allowed.

Hi,

I would expect there to a very small airleak in the fuel filter housing. The symptoms are longer cranking, especially when the car is parked on a hill with nose up. Renewing the housing sorts it (only a few tenners from MB).

regards,

Job

Hi Marcos,
I am very surprised to hear about this recall. I certainly have not had one and would be grateful if you could supply more details.

I am touching my wooden head here and saying, "So far so good and no problems."

Bye for now,
John
